WHITE LINES ON BITUMEN ROADS.

HIGHWAYS BOARD TO PAY TWO-THIRDS COST. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, June 19. The Main Highways Board at its last meeting dealt with a question of general importance to motorists, that of painting white centre lines on the principal highways, which are bitumen surfaced. The board realises that this is of importance where traffic is heavy, as it appreciably improves regulation of the traffic and is particularly necessary on curves where there is restricted visibility. It has, therefore, decided to encourage local bodies in providing this improvement by offering to pay two-thirds of the cost of painting white lines on busy highways. Clutha Bridge.

An extensive bridging proposal affecting the South Island main highway was advanced to the stage of finality when the board approved plans and specifications for a new bridge over the Clutha River at Balclutha. It is to be a steel truss structure, erected on cylinders, and the estimated cost is £58,000. The board will provide a subsidy on a £2 for £1 basis for the first £IO,OOO, a £3 to £1 subsidy between £IO,OOO and £30,000, and the whole of the remaining expenditure. This arrangement will involve interested local bodies in a liability of under £9OOO and the board proposes to make a citation on Balclutha borough and Bruce and Clutha counties to each pay one-tliird of that sum.
