“ Tormentors ” is the name given to the long panels of fabric-covered wood which mask the edges of the scenery each side of a stage. In the days when stages were smaller and scenery was big and cumbersome, the panels were a nuisance by impeding entrances and exits and making a quick change of scenery a matter of difficulty. Hence “ Tormentors.” It was upon Thomas Legge in 1354 that the title of “ Lord ” was first conferred in addition to that of “ Mayor ” of London. Sixty-two persons held the office of Mayor of London before 1354. Henry Fit2 Adw.yry the first, was appointed. by the Grown in 11SS, and he continued in office for twentv-fout years. Prior to 1188 the chief official of London was called the Portreeve.
