SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES

Bright Prospects for To-morrow.

The winter meeting of the Soutn Canterbury Jockey Club will be held at Washdyke to-morrow. Most of the events have attracted strong fields, and with the competitors drawn from a wide area the racing should provide great interest. A special train for passengers and horses will leave Christchurch at 7 a.m., arriving at the course at 10.42 a.xn. The return journey from Timaru will be started at 6.33 p.m., and the train is due in Christchurch at 10.5 p.m. The following is the programme: — Noon. PUKAKI HURDLES HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile and a half. Lancer 10 13 Haze 9 2 Troilus 10 6 Wayward 9 * Aladdin 10 6 Barrington 9 0 Craigmore 9 9 Red Heather 9 0 Desert Glow 9 S Oriflamb 9 U Camisader 9 6 Gallivanter 9 0 Lancer has not raced for nearly a year, so he may be at a disadvantage, but he has been working well, and he will be equal to a good performance. Troilus is very useful, and the distance will just suit him, so he cannot be ignored, in spite of his Dunedin failure. Aladdin won twice at the Dunedin meeting, and he looks like reaching good class as a hurdler. Craigmore has been on the down grade for some time, and Desert Glow has nothing to commend him yet. Camisader, another novice, shaped well at the Dunedin meeting, and he will have to be reckoned with. Of those lower down. Haze and Barrington have shown some form. Aladdin, Camisader, Toilus, and Lancer should ensure a good and judged on their form at Wingatui, the first-named pair may be best. 12.35 p.m. NOVICE HANDICAP, of 70 sovs. Six furlongs. llkley 10 3 Crunchem 9 0 Sleipner 10 3 Silver Salver 9 0 Home Coming 9 11 Locksley 9 0 Tippling 9 9 Elude 9 0 Tea. Urn 9 9 Teresa 9 0 Coroner 9 2 Blue Ray 9 0 Whatnot 9 2 Ilklev showed useful form at the Dunedin meeting, where he was second to Tea Urn. There may not be much between this pair. Both of them read better than Tippling on their latest running, though on some earlier form Tippling is worth attention. Sleipner may not be ready for a hard race, but Home Coming may do better in this race than anything he has shown in recent track gallops. Coroner would win if he would do his best, but he is not reliable. Whatnot is a speedy nonstayer, but it is worth remembering that this is not a strong field. Lower down, Silver Salver is a likely sort, while Elude is another who may improve. Tea Um and llkley, however, are the best on recent form. 1.10 p.m. WAI-ITI TROT HANDICAP, of 90 bovs. Class 3.42. On© mile and a half. Edna Worthy scr Tat Wrack scr Plying Prince scr Black Watch 22 Jester scr Worthy King 12 Mahara scr Master Don Matchless Prince Wrack 24 Bingen scr Lord Antrim 36 Symmetry scr Great de Oro 18 Edna Worthy showed up well in the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton, and the two-year-old may be improved a lot by that race. Symmetry has some good form, entitling her to respect, and she will be hard to head off If she repeats her 3.26 4-5, when second at Ashburton last month. Black Watch looked a useful sort earlier in the season, but has not quite fulfilled promise. Master Don registered a good performance at Ashburton last Saturday, and only needs to race up to that effort to be dangerous. Symmetry and Master Don appeal most. 1.45 p.m. PRINCE EDWARD HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. One mile and 35yds. Ariklwai 10 9 Wingatui 9 2 Royal Saxon 10 6 First Raid 9 2 Inevitable 10 3 Night Effort 9 0 Starshooter 9 11 Nightmaid 9 0 Rascal 9 11 Shortly 9 0 Noteworthy 9 11 Takutama 9 0 Glenrowan 9 9 Thursby 9 0 Arikiwai may not be quite ready to show his proper form. Royal Saxon has been racing well lately, and must have a great chance. Inevitable was considered unlucky at Auckland, and

may make amends here. Starshooter is well, but his prospects depend on the weather, as he requires a firm track. Ilis stable-mate, Rascal, on the other hand, is best when the ground is soft, though he races well under any conditions. He is in great fettle at present. Glenrowan cannot be ignored, as the distance will just suit him. First Raid is good when in the humour, but he has not been consistent lately. Night Effort can run a useful mile. It is probable, however, that those on the minimum will be held safe by the horses higher up. Inevitable and Rascal look a likely pair. 2.20 p.m. CRAIGMORE HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. About two miles ami a half. West Dome II 2 Craigmore 912 Valves 10 5 Rangatahi 9 9 Umtali 10 2 Thurlna 9 0 Diamond Jack 9 12 Star Tractor 9 0 West Dome gave patchy displays of jumping at the Dunedin meeting, but fenced well when he won on the middle day. The easier country at Washdyke should favour his chance. Valves was placed on the last day at Wingatui, and only requires to show his best to be hard to beat. Umtali won at Wingatui, but should be held safe by West Dome if the latter jumps decently. Craigmcre’s speed would help him if he could stay. The Riccarton candidate, Thurina, has schooled well lately, and he is a bold galloper. Lack of race experience is the only thing against him. For that reason, however, he must be discarded at present, in favour of West Dome and Valves. 2.55 p.m. TEMUKA HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile and a. quarter. Quinopal 10 6 Water Power 9 6 Taragona 9 9 High Speed 9 0 Jock o’ Palmary 9 0 Hazeldean 9 7 Uxbridge 9 0 Quinopal won a nine-furlong highweight event at Riccarton in February and followed it up by running third to Juniper and Giggleswick over a mile at Motukarara. Those were his last starts, and nothing is known of his present condition. Apart from that, the distance might trouble him with a solid pace all the way, but in this field there is a prospect of the race being run to suit him. Taragona won at Ashburton last month, showing impressive stamina, and as he looks an improved horse since then, it is difficult to go past him. Jock o’ Hazeldean has no recent form Of the others, Water Power and High Speed are possibilities. Taragona, however, seems to stand out. 3.30 p.m. BEACONS FI ELD TROT HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Class 2.58. One mile and a quarter. Ballade scr Silverwood scr Great de Oro scr Bracken 12 King Oscar scr Dusolina 12 Lily Bingen scr Rafa 12 Lord Antrim fcicr Tahoe 3 2 Needles scr Pronto Bingen 24 Sandown scr George Rey 48 Ballade won in good style early in the season, and should improve. Sandown, however, makes strong appeal after last week’s form at Ashburton, where he only failed at the finish of a mile and a-half. A repetition of that effort will keep his opponents busy. Lily Bingen raced well in the same event, and is a possibility. Dusolina has speed, but lacks stamina. Bracken was another who competed in the Ashburton race. She tangled early, but later showed plenty of pace. Bracken and Sandown may fight out the finish. 4.5 p.m. SEADOWN HANDICAP, of 100 SOTS. Six furlongs. Royal Saxon 10 13 Greenaway 9 10 Mount Boa 10 9 Wise Choice 9 8 Limited 10 6 Miss Mercia 9 l laa 10 3 Takutama 9 0 Francolin 9 11 Royal Saxon has an earlier engagebent, but he may be better suited here. He is a good sprinter, and very well at present. Mount Boa has done some of his best racing over longer journeys, but he is a smart sprinter, when sharpened up. Limited' has performed well lately, but Isa has no recent form. Greenaway was placed twice at the Dunedin meeting, and she should be hard to beat. Mount Boa and Greenaway are a likely pair.
