RAILWAY STAFF HAVE DOUBLE BEREAVEMENT.
DEATHS OF TRAFFIC MANAGER AND GUARD.
(Special to the " Star.”) WANGANUI, June 18.
The Wanganui Railway Department staff suffered a double bereavement this morning in* the sudden passing of Mr A. S. Campbell, acting traffic manager, and the death of Guard PMatthews, who fell off a train at Baker’s Crossing. Mr Campbell, who was formerly station master at Auckland, being in charge there when the new station was opened, had only been in Wanganui five weeks. He found it necessary to enter a private hospital about ten days ago for treatment, but septicaemia set in. He was recognised as one of the most efficient officers in the service. He had been stationed in various parts of New Zealand, including Christchurch and Dunedin. His wife and family are in Dunedin, and the funeral will take place there. Not one on the train saw the accident which resulted in the death of Guard Matthews. The train was conveying the Wanganui section of the Auckland Limited’s passengers from Mar ton, including the Hon W. A. Veitch. It was found necessary to divide it in half at the hill approaching Baker’s Crossing. One section had been brought up, and it was then discovered that Guard Matthews had fallen beside the rails. He died shortly afterwards. Guard Matthews joined the service in 1914, and for eight years had been stationed at Marton. He leaves a widow and one child.
