ROAD RACE WILL START AT WAIMATE
DECISION REACHED BY CANTERBURY CENTRE. .The. Canterbury Centre, of. tbe N'6w. ; Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union decided last evening on th* motion of Mr G. Henderson to endorse the recommendation Of the special subcommittee which proposed that the annual road race should be held from Waimate. The race is to be held on October 3, the first Saturday in the month, and will finish at the Christchurch show grounds. 1 -Mr W. Cole said it had been well demonstrated that the distance was not too great. Last year’s race had been successful and tlie££ was no lack of enthusiasm. Means of raising money were discus,s----ed a suggestions being made that a public business community be canvassed and a dance held. It was agreed that a sub-committee wait upon Mr R. Stillwell to make arrangements for the holding of a dance. The president (Mr W. J. Walter) advocated the holding of a public meeting and it was decided to call the meeting for July 8. Invitations would be sent out and the meeting would be advertised. Canvassing would be attended to after the meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to, Mr J. M. Coffey, who had taken the other members of the sub-committee, Messrs W. J. Walter and P. C. Lucas, down to Waimate when they had met the Waimate Retailers* Association. The association had promised to raise the same amount of money as last year. Oamaru was found to be willing to run trial races in North Otago. At Tlmani, an enthusiastic meeting had promised all /support, while preferring that the race begin at Waimate.
