Present:—Mesdames Gitson, Sharpe and Holland, Messrs J. E. Jones, A. Hill, A. Alexander, E. C. Street, F. Neal, D. Johnson, Gurnsey and C. V. Harvey. It was reported that during the month there -were ten new subscribers. Two books had been renewed, 74 placed on the shelves and 69 had been repaired by the ladies. A successful “ bring and buy ” social was organised by the Spring Show Committee at the St Saviour’s Church, Sydenham, this week. The programme consisted of games and musical items, and the proceeds were in aid of the spring show. Papanui Progress League. A meeting of the Papanui Progress League was held last evening, Mr W. J. Boyce presiding. Mr R. Rickerby reported that he had interviewed the occupier of a section at the corner of Sawyers’ Arms Road and North Road, which was alleged to be dangerous, and the occupier had stated that he only held the land on a three years’ lease. Mr Rickerby said that he had interviewed residents nearby, who used the road, and they considered that the corner was perfectly safe if taken slowly and on the correct side. Mr Burrows said he had used Sawyers’ Arms Road for the last thirty years, and found the corner safe. It was decided to go no further with the matter. Mr J. Scofield asked that the CityCouncil be written to regarding additional lights in Matson’s Road, between Aorangi and Bligh’s Roads. It was decided to make the request, and also that an additional light be placed in Langdon’s Road, between Chapel Street and Sail’s Road. The attention of the City Council would also be drawn to the state of the footpath and road in Windemere Road. Winter Fair at v Papanui. A Winter Fair was held at Papanui Memorial Hall yesterday afternoon and evening, in aid of the funds of St Giles Presbyterian Church. The Rev. E. Bandy, in declaring the bazaar open, I congratulated the stall-holders on the | bright stalls. j The stall-holders were:—Sweets, Mesdames Neilson and M’Cullough; men’s stall, Mesdames Wallace, Fraser, August; produce, Mesdames Kruse, Barnard, sen., and Wray; cake, Mesdames Quirk and Corrich; work stall, Mesdames Reid, Cook, Calder and Graham; shilling stall, Mesdames Bandy, Mulholland, Williamson, Peters, Moxley and Miss Bogbitt; tea rooms, Mesdames Sneddon, Watson, Hyde, Dailey, Misses Dobbs, M’Laughian, Campbell, Jenkins, Bandy, Wallace and Becke-tt; side-shows, Messrs August (2), Reid and Dalle)-. Social at Heathcote. The series of fortnightly socials in aid of funds for the spring flower show were continued in the St Mary’s Schoolroom, Heathcote, on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable evening was

spent. Novelties in the form of balloons, streamers and squeakers added to the enjoyment. The music was supplied by Mr Russell Beaumont and Mr D. Connolly was M.C. Heathcote Pound Scheme. A meeting of the Pound Scheme Committee was held in the Heathcote School on Monday evening. The chairman, Mr N. G. Collins, presided. The collectors reported that the appeal had met with a . good response and that a large number of weekly contributions had been premised. The first collection of goods took place on Tuesday and a large amount was forwarded to the central depob Heathcote Miniature Rifles. The Heathcote miniature rifle team were successful in their match with the Working Men’s Club on the home range on Tuesday evening, when they won by a margin of eight points. The scores were: Heathcote—Nicholl 69, Wakelin 63, Williams 63, Read 67, La Grosse 66, Ashworth 66, Evans 68, Deavoll 66; total 528. Working Men’s Club—Watt 65, Hollow 68, Ashworth 61, Hutchinson 67, Davidson 67, O’Connor 68. Armstrong 62, Lavery 62; total 520. Wooiston Public Library. The annual meeting of subscribers of the Wooiston Public Library was held on Tuesday evening, Mr E. E. Snelling presiding over a small attendance. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3B 7s 9d. The report stated that the number of subscribers was 139 adults and nine juveniles, a decrease of six in the adults and an increase of four in the juveniles. During the year, 255 books were placed on the shelves, and approximately 100 removed. It was decided to recommend the committee that a greater endeavour be made next year to secure more members present at the annual meeting. The following officers were elected:— Chairman, Mr S. H. Johns; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. B. Richardson; committee, Messrs Snelling, Graham, Lingard, Smythe, Mauger, Cater, Cooper, Mellluish and Lilburne. It was decided that the General Committee be the Social Committee, with Mr E. C. Snelling and the secretary and treasurer. Selectors of books would be Messrs Richardson and Lilburne. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring chairman, Mr E. C. Snelling, and a vote of appreciation of the work done by the ladies at the various socials was recorded. «.* *.* Brick Schools. All brick schools are being repaired and inspected so that they will be free from risk of damage by earthquake. This statement was made by the Hon 11. Atmore. Minister of Education, when replying to a question at a meeting in Christchurch last night.
