MEETING OF EXECUTIVE OF RED CROSS SOCIETY.

PROGRESS IN HOME NURSING INSTRUCTION

A meeting of the Executive and Finance Committee of the Canterbury (New Zealand) branch of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John was held at Christchurch on Wednesday. Present: Mr C. J. Ronaldson (chairman), Lady Wigram, Miss Guthrie, Messrs 11. L. Bowker and W. E. D. Bishop. The financial statement showed that during May 205 ex-service patients had received attention at the Upper Sanatorium, Cashmere Hills: at Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmer Springs: at the Ashburton Hospital: at the Timaru Hospital: at the Westland Mental Hospital; at the Rannerdale Home: at the Coronation Hospital; at the Sunnyside Mental Hospital; at the Christchurch Hospital and as out-patients. The expenditure on clothing, tobacco, hospital requisites, extra food, motor hire, amusements and grants to the various matrons for miscellaneous purchases had totalled £llO 13s 7d. In addition expenditure on Red Cross Club work, which provided moving pictures, furnishings, cards, newspapers, books, magazines and other amusements had totalled £SO 14s sd.

It was reported that a bequest of £2O had been received from the estate cf the late Miss E. Haines, of Scarborough, Sumner, and it was resolved that a letter of appreciation and thanks be sent to Miss S. Haines, of Sumner.

Accounts were passed for payment as follows:—Depot £4O 17s 2d. general £53 2s lid.

Major Barnes’s report on mental hospital patients for May showed that eighty-nine men, an increase of six on the previous month’s total, had been visited and fruit, cigarettes and tobacco had been distributed. Sister Christian's report on work in the Greymouth district for May stated that courses of instruction in health and home nursing were completed at the end of May. Matron Lord had conducted the examinations. A junion* course of instruction was given to the Girl Guides, the Rangers and Convent students. The Rangers and Girl Guides were examined for home nursing badges, all passing. The Rangers were also given a course in public health and gained their public health badges. The Commissioner for Girl Guides for the Westland district had expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Red Cross executive for the opportunity given for Guides and Rangers to receive instruction.

It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to to Matron Lord of the Greymouth Hospital for conducting the examinations.

It was decided that Sister Christian should make her next headquarters at Methven, from where she would work Methven, Mount Somers, Lauriston Staveley, Alford Forest, Lyndhurst! Highbank, Mayfield, Ruapuna and Lismore.
