MINISTERS’ STIPENDS NOT TO BE REDUCED.

PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY DISCUSSES QUESTION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 6. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church unanimouslv declared the Rev. Adam Begg, of Hig'hfield, Timaru, Moderator-Elect for 1932. The report of the sub-committee of elders, which considered the question of reducing ministerial salaries, was presented. The convener said that many ministers and missionaries had intimated their willingness to share the sacrifices made by the community, but the committee recognised that the stipends now paid were very inadequate and compared unfavourably with the wages generally paid in the community. Moreover, they had not participated in the increases that had characterised’ the salaries of others during the past few years. The committee was convinced that there should be no reduction. His colleagues on the committee, all businessmen, were of the opinion that the minimum stipend should be increased, rather than decreased. The report was adopted.

In the Tahuna Umtali took up the running early. Cultivator had a life at the log fence, while Kaikahu dropped his rider as they came back to the course proper. Along the back Cultivator was not jumping cleanly. Star Tractor joined Umtali in the lead, Tractarian being six lengths away, with Cultivator and Heather Lad handy. Before reaching the water jump Tractarian had dropped out and Star Tractor and Umtali were left to dispute the leadership, three lengths clear of Cultivator and Heather Lad. The quartet were bunched racing for the brush at the top of the straight. Umtali was first over, but in the run home Cultivator beat him by half a length. Heather Lad was third, eight lengths away, just beating Star Tractor. Tractarian was pulled up. In the Aldworth Handicap, Palmary was left, and Ballance also suffered in a poor start. High Speed was smartest out. Ballance made up the lost ground quickly and Sailing Home took charge passing the six-furlong post, followed by Spanish Maid. Going up the rise The Smuggler moved up to the leaders. Sailing Home was straightened for home first and in a hard finish Spanish Maid got up to beat The Smuggler by a neck. Ballance was fourth.

The field closed up racing past the five furlongs post, where Night Maid was at the tail of the field. At the far turn Ball Dress was just in front of Punchestown, Charmaine, Wingatui and Ball Dress. Punchestown moved up at the straight entrance, where Night Maid was improving her position. Then Salmo Salar came with a strong run, getting up to beat the favourite by a head. Night Maid finished third, three lengths and a half away, followed by Wingatui, Charmaine and Mount Boa. In the Greenfield Hurdles, Alladin made the running most of the way, with Membo and Camisader always handy.
