The new traffic bridge over the Ashburton River on the Main South Road is expected to be opened in about a month’s time. The contractor is now engaged in pouring the last of the concrete required, and a bitumen surface is about to be laid down. The formation of the approaches is practically complete. The attention of the Reserves Committee of the City Council has been drawn to the fact that the sum of £96 6s 7d was expended in wages by the council in extinguishing the scrub fires which recently occurred in the Hospital Board’s plantation at Bottle Lake and at North Brighton. As nearly all the work done was on the property of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and in areas controlled by the New Brighton Borough Council, the committee has written to the bodies concerned asking them to contribute towards the cost.
