NEW BRIGHTON AFFAIRS DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr J. If. Shaw), Councillors E. L. Smith. A. E. Lawry, E. A. M. Leaver, J. S. Ainsworth, J. M’Creanor. S. J. B. Bargrove and G. W. Bishop. The Midget Golf Syndicate wrote applying for permission to open the golf links to the public on Good Friday. On the motion of Councillor M’Ci'eanor permission was refused. Works Committee. The Christchurch Tramway Board, writing in reference to the reconstruction of Bowliiil Road and Rookwood Avenue, said that the board’s 'powers were limited to tramwav work, and trouble might arise if it undertook work which it was not empowered by law to do. The board suggested that the council should do both jobs, the board paying as its share £.'oo. The Works Committee recommended that the letter be left to the sub-com-mittee which had waited upon the board. A letter "'ns received from Mr F. W. Freeman forwarding an estimate of the cost of the reconstruction of Bowhill Road and Rookwood Avenue (excepting an Bft strip controlled bv the Tramway Board) at £3OOO. The North Beach and Waimairi Progress League wrote drawing attention

to the need for conveniences in the vicinity of Beach Road, also the necessity for kerbing the parking place between the Memorial Hall and the surf pavilion. It was resolved to recommend the incoming council to give the matter or the conveniences favourable consideration. The chairman stated that the kerbing asked for was included in the schedule of work for the unemployed. A letter was received from the same body emphatically protesting against the action of the Tramwav Board in Placing a pole in the car 'parking area north of the Memorial Hall. Tt was resolved that the chairman and overseer inspect the damage caused to the kerbby the recent erection of the tramway poles. Schedule of Work. The following schedule of work submitted by the Unemployment Committee was approved:—(l) Constructing footpath, Estuary Road, from Cargeeg’s western side south; constructing footpath in Estuary Road on the east side from Bridge Street; 30 men. (2) Estuary road extension; 20 men. (3) Pino Avenue footpath, from Jcrvois Street south; men. (4) Sports ground; 21 men; (~) North Brighton School; 20 ,VY « erbklK at North Beach; 4 men. («) Marriott’s Road, from Jubilee lW e, lV e to Racecourse Road: 30 men. (S) New Brighton School; 6 men. (0) V, r °f IU * t STOUnd.
