RAN AGROUND NEAR THURSDAY ISLAND
FURTHER NEWS FROM OIL TANKER LUCERNA. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received March 30, 9.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 30. It is believed that the Lucerna is aground somewhere near Thursday Island. Another wireless message has been intercepted to the effect that the Lucerna is in communication with the Aigle station, Singapore. The steamer Ombilin is making an attempt to refloat her to-day. Concern was expressed in Sydney on Saturday for the safety of the oil tanker Lucerna as the result of a faint S.O.S. signal and the ship’s number received at the Broome wireless station. The vessel is supposed to be carrying a full load of motor spirit for New Zealand. The Lucerna was expected to reach Thursday Island this week. No position was given with the S.O.S. signal, and the Broome station’s inquiry elicited no reply.
