BAD ROADS CAUSE MANY COMPLAINTS.
SUBURBAN AUTHORITIES CRITICISED BY COUNCIL.
Criticism of the Riccarton Borough Council and the Heathcote County Council was freely expressed at last night's ‘meeting of the City Council when reference was made to the state of certain roads in the districts controlled by those local bodies. Councillor H. T. J. Thacker drew attention to the state of the West Belt, from Hagley Avenue to the Addington Saleyards. He asked the Mayor to interview the Mayor of Riccarton with a view to. having this section of road put in proper repair. He stated that the road was used a great deal and was in a disgraceful state. Councillor J. W. Beanland, chairman of the Works Committee, to whom the Mayor referred the question, said he would like to force the Riccarton Borough Council to put the road in order. He also would like to force the same council to complete the section of Lincoln Road, from Moorhouse Avenue to the Addington Post Office. The Riccarton Council had refused to do anything to the road, though the City Council had offered it terms that were more than favourable. The Maj r or informed Councillor Thacker that he would make representations to the Mayor of Riccarton regarding the West Belt. “Worse Than a Riverbed.” A complaint regarding the state of Canal Reserve, from Hargood Street to Dyers Street, was made by Councillor Elizabeth M’Combs. Stating that this section of road was “ worse than a riverbed,” she asked if there was any prospect of it being put into decent order by the time the reconstruction of Ferry Road reached Hargood Street. If that were done, she said, it could be used as an alternative route to Ferry Road for traffic to and from Sumner. Road to Ak&roa. Councillor Thacker also drew attention to the state of the main highway to Akaroa. He said that it was more like a river than a road and with the unemployment schemes now in operation he thought that an effort should be made to have something done to it. The Mayor agreed to Councillor Thacker’s suggestion that he should make representations regarding the matter to the county councils concerned. ’ ,
