Professor J. E. L. Cull returned to Christchurch by .the ferry steamer yesterday morning. Mr A. L. Gray was among the passengers from Wellington by the ferry steamer yesterday morning. Senator J. Moran, of the Irish Free State, is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., has been appointed chairman -of the Railways Appeal Board. The Public Trustee, Mr J. W. Macdonald, has been appointed a member of the Native Trust Office Board for a period of two years. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Law Society, held on Friday afternoon, Mr H. C. D. van Asch was elected president, and Mr A. T. Donnelly vice-president for the ensuing year. • * Miss Pauline Bennett, of the Marlborough Aero Club( has secured a B pilot’s license, the first issued to a clubtrained pilot in the Dominion (says a Blenheim Press Association message). Mr C. E. Davis, a director of the GreV Valley Collieries, Ltd., Dobson, who, with the other directors has been visiting the mine, has returned to Christchurch. Mr J. W. Townsend, Inspector of Machinery and Surveyor of Ships at Wanganui, has been prompted by the Marine Department to Lyttelton as the senior officer. Messrs J. Boyd and J. S. Storey have been re-appointed members of the Marlborough Land Board, and Mr Bernard Wood has been re-appointed to the Westland Board. Sir James and Lad'* Parr embarked in the Remuera on their return to New Zealand. They were farewelled by Sir Thomas Wilford and a party of New Zealanders. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr A. J. Merton was passed at the annual meeting of the Canterbury division of the New Zealand Society of Professional Teachers of Music on Saturday evening. The chairman (Mr Sidney Williamson) referred to the sterling qualities of the division’s late president. Letters of sympathy were also read from the ©amaru ancj Manawatu Societies. Prior to the formal business of the meeting of the New Zealand ’ Polar Year Committee, at Wellington, last week, his Excellency the Governor- 1 General, who presided, suggested that the committee should send a message of congratulation to Lord Rutherford of Nelson on the honour conferred upon him recently by his Majesty*. The proposal received the enthusiastic and unanimous support of the meeting.
