GOLD PROSPECTING SCHEME AT KANIERI
NEW DREDGE WILL BE LAUNCHED SHORTLY.
(Special to the “ Star.”) HOKITIKA, March 14. That interest in gold mining in this locality is still extant is evidenced by the fact that further prospecting of Kanieri Flat is about to be undertaken. A S3 r ndicate has taken an option over a large alluvial area held in that locality and prospecting work will be put in hand. A considerable area of alluvial ground lies at the rear of the township. If an economical scheme can be devised for working the territory no doubt the promoters will be encouraged to go on with their venture. Matters are now being finalised for the launching of the new dredge for Rimu Flat on Wednesday week. Work on the completion of the large hull is now being advanced rapidly, over sixty men being employed. The function will take place at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Ministers of the Crown have been invited to be present and much local interest is being evinced in the event. Following the christening and launching, a citizens’ address will be presented by the Mayor on behalf of local bodies to the management of the company in appreciation of what has been done by successive managers to meet the requirements of the district in all public matters where help was required. A complimentary ball will be held at night.
