St Ninian’s Church. Instead of the usual bazaar, St Ninian’s Church has, for the past three years, held a freewill offering for the debt reduction fund. Yesterday, the Rev J. A. Allan announced that this year’s collection, taken on March 8, amounted to £l5O, if all promises were redeemed. The Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club members journeyed to Diamond Harbour yesterday, when the annual contest for the Putnam Cup took place. The race was swum from the jetty to the house-boat and back, twice, a distanve of approximately 500yds. It resulted in a win for R. Norton, a lad only thirteen years of age. L. Newell was second and J. O. Hattersley third. St John’s Choir, Woolston. The St John’s Choir, Woolston, held their annual picnic on Saturday afternoon at Pleasant Point Domain. About thirty attended. The time was spent in games, in which adults and children participated, under the leadership of the Rev F. A. Tooley and Mr L. C. M. Saunders. Personal. The friends of Mr C. M. Lilburne will be sorry to learn that he has had to return to the Christchurch Hospital for treatment. Progress League.

A meeting of the executive of the Linwood and Woolston Progress League was held in the Linwood Avenue School, Mr Disney occupying the chair. It was decided to write to the City Council asking that Tilford Street should be tar-sealed, as the enormous traffic during the broadsiding season creates a dust nuisance, and also asking that the wooden rails on the bridge in that street be replaced by cement posts. A request will be forwarded to the Drainage Board asking to have the drain flowing into the outfall drain cleaned. The association expressed appreciation of the City Council’s action in regard to the work done on Linwood Avenue, and hoped that it would be continued.
