FINE FINISH IN TIMARU CUP RACE

MILO MINTO SCORES BY HALF A LENGTH

The autumn meeting of the Timaru Trotting Club was held on the Washdyke course on Saturday. The weather was gloriously fine and there was a capital attendance. The track was in good order, although somewhat dusty, and there was some keen contests and interesting finishes. The race for the Cup provided one of the finest ever seen on the course, as when the field turned into the straight at least six horses were racing almost in line. At the finish Milo Minto won by r half a length and the next four to finish were very close together. The management of the meeting was up to the club’s usual high standard and the races were got off very punctually. There was a drop in the totalisator investments, £13,728 being handled, as against £20,281 10s for the corresponding day last season. Honora Bingen, who was made favourite for the Kingsdown Handicap, was never dangerous, as she made a bad beginning. The race was an easy one for Quincey Thorpe, who led throughout and won very easily, despite a couple of bad breaks. Royal Purple, Real Boy and Lucky Voyage followed the leader in the early stages, whilst Fairyland came into a good position at the end of the first half mile, and Lucky Voyage did not stay on at all well. Todd Lonzia, who made a couple of mistakes, finished up his task well. Jean Ballin was also going better over the last quarter of a mile. Louis Bingen, who was second favourite, showed no speed at all. Real Boy trotted much better than in his earlier races. Fairyland kept much steadier than usual, but seemed troubled at the end of the race and did not finish at all well. Reverie broke up at the start and would not trot at all. A Fine Contest. There was a fine contest for the Trial Handicap, in which Compromise, Fleet Arrow and Ron were backed in that order. Lord Antrim went out fast and led Prince Wrack, Mahara, Ron and Ruin. There was no change at the end of a round, where Compromise and Fleet Arrow had improved their positions. Lord Antrim still had charge along, the back, where Compromise had raced into second place. Once in the straight Compromise drew right away and won very easily from Lord Antrim and Royal Parade, who finished on well. Emma Harvester, Royal Audo and Zane failed to go off at the start, and Mahara was finished with at the end of half the distance. Ron had every chance, despite the fact that he covered some extra ground. Prince Wrack failed in the last quarter of a mile and Black Watch went very badly. Great Finish For Cup. All started for the Cup, which was a very fine contest and produced a great finish. Red Shadow was just a little better backed than Milo Minto Cranleigh went out first, with Arethusa, Milo Minto, Proud Dillon and Editor next. Royal Serene and Sunfish did not go off. At the end of half a mile the field was racing in close order, with Editor just in front of Cranleigh and Milo Minto. With a round to go, Red Shadow, Editor and Cranleigh were almost in line, .followed by Proud Dillon, Milo Minto, Hostess and Jolly Pet Arethusa dropped back a little further on and Editor lost his place. Red Shadow also commenced to tire. Cranleigh came into the straight just in front of Milo Minto, Hostess, Kelp and Rollo. There was a great race to the post, Milo Minto winning by half a length from Cranleigh, who beat Hostess by a neck. A neck away came Rollo, just in front of Kelp and Great Author. Proud Dillon very badly and so did Jolly Pet. Neither John Noble nor Torpedo Huon were ever near the leaders. Baron Bingen found the speed too solid, and Aleron, who was fractious at the barrier, was never dangerous. Ratloc Hemmed In. Ratloc and Netta Oro carried most money in the Seadown Handicap, Lord Matchlight also being well supported. It was another good race and produced a capital finish. Lydia Pointer took the lead and had Willie Derby, Baron Derby and Netta Oro following. There was not much change for half the distance, when Ratloc made a forward movement but was in on the rails. Going round the turn into the straight, Dusolina and Needles fell, and Lydia Pointer came on just in front of Netta Oro, with Logaleen and Ratloc next. Netta Oro headed Lydia Pointer and went on and won by a length from the fast-finishing Ratloc, who came very fast once he got clear, Baron Derby stopped over the last quarter of a mile, and Lord Matchlight went very badly. Some Guy went a poor race. Solid Favourite Wins. There was another fine race for the Temuka Handicap, in which Biddy Parrish was made a solid favourite. Merce Bingen took the lead from Biddy Parrish, the pair being well clear of the rest of the field in the first quarter of a mile. Coming up the straight the first time. Great Way put in fine run and so did Hydro, who took charge going out of the straight, and was followed, by Great Way, Merce Bingen and Biddy Parrish. With a round to go the positions were unchanged, but Lough Guy made a forward movement. Along the back. Hydro was stopping and Merce Bingen went to the front with Lough Guy second, followed by Great Way and Biddy; Parrish. Conserving his final run, Tomkinson, on Biddy Parrish, came along in the straight and beat Lough Guy by a length. Merce Bingen was two lengths away third, followed by Great Way and Mountain Mist. Easy for Real Girl. Real Girl was made a solid favourite for the Washdyke Handicap, and in the final stages of the race she drew right away and very easily. Our George took charge at the start, and Mr Lie de Oro was very slow to begin. Before a quarter of a mile was covered Lady Antrim was in front, with F.eal Girl, Our George, Holly Bank and Denver Hinds iacing in that order. Alvng the back Real Girl went to the front, and Denver Hinds was in second place, fcllo-ved bv Our George, Holly Bank and Maurice Dillon. Once in the straight Real Girl drew right away and won very easily from Our George, with Denver Hinds next, followed by Holly Bank. The rest of the field was some distance back. Mister Pointer did not go off right and never got close to the leaders. Pink Sugar went a poor race. Maurice Dillon'did not see out the journey, although showing a lot of speed over the first half of the contest. Lady Antrim, after going well for a mile, stopped badly. A Poor Contest. There was a poor contest for the Fairlie Handicap, which was won with the greatest of ease by the favourite, St George. Erin’s Advance led out from Ethiopian and Jessie Huon, and at the stand the first time the order was Ethiopian, Erin's Advance, Jessie Huon, Denver City and St George. the back

Ethiopian broke and dropped right back, Jessie Huon taking charge from St George and Denver City. Going out of the straight the last time Jessie Huon broke, and this gave St George a big break. Ethiopian came along again and raced with Denver City in second place. St George easily held his own to the end, winning in hollow fashion from Ethiopian, who headed Denver City in the straight and beat him by four lengths. Elite Bingen, who looked short of work, was fourth. Real Huon went a very bad race and looks as though he will require a spell. Saddle Event to Wild Voyage. There were nine starters for the Waiiti Handicap, a mile saddle event, class 2min I9sec. On account of her recent showing at New Brighton the Ashbur-ton-owned pacer Wild Vo3 r age was made a substantial favourite, the now New Brighton-trained mare Lily Harold being second choice with backers. The favourite never looked like being beaten and had a verv easy victory. Roibert Bell led out from King Abdallah and 1 umatakura, with the favourite next, followed by Guy Bingen. At the end of half the distance Wild Voyage took charge and Guy Bingen had gone into second place, followed bv King Abdallah and Tumatakura. 'in the straight Wild \ oyage drew right away and won very easily by three lengths from King Abdallah, who beat Tumatakura by a length, then coming Guy Bingen and Lily Harold, the last named putting in a good last furlong. Robert Bell and Guy Bingen- both stopped badly in the straight.
