ANCIENT BONES FOUND UNDER NAPIER SHOPS.
considerable interest AROUSED BY DISCOVERY Per Press Association. NAPIER, March 16. The commission has decided not to patch up the Napier South sewerage system, and a new installation will be undertaken in a few weeks. The attendance at the High School jumped from 35 to 65 over the weekend. Three experts have been appointed to advise the commission as to the removal of buildings and the erection of new structures. Human remains, believed in some circles to be pre-Maori, were discovered beneath the foundations of Napier shops, causing the belief that an ancient burial place is situated here. The Polynesian Society states that the bones certainly are ancient, but it cannot state definitely whether they are Maori. Considerable interest is attached to the discovery. Full excavation has not been made owing to the dangerous condition of the walls.
