SWIMMING.

JUBILEE CARNIVAL HELD BY CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. The Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club celebrated it« jubilee this after- j noon when an inter-club carnival was ; held as the fiftieth swimming meeting j conducted by the club. The president, Mr W. E. D. Bishop, 1 who is also president of the Xew Zealand Swimming Council, welcomed competitors and spectators, stating that the club felt that it was a red-letter day in its history.- Sometimes during the fifty years some weak times had be.en experienced, but there had always been enthusiasts who carried on. Now the club was in a healthy condition with a good junior membership. No doubt at no distant day the club would return to its place as premier club in Christchurch. He then declared the carnival open. The intermediate boys’ Canterbury 1 00yds backstroke championship was won easily by G. Low (United) and Miss IVT. MacDonald (East Christchurch) won the 220yds women’s breaststroke championship through Miss V. Berry being disqualified. The third and final distance of the club’s junior championship was won by AV. Donaldson. The final results for this championship, with which goes the Francis Memorial Cup, were:—M. Dent, points; AA*. Donaldson, 8£ points; F. S. Jennings, 3 points. The final distance of the Harris Cup—the club championship—was held, D. McLennan winning from M. Dent. These two gained an equal number of points, and will hold the cup six months apiece. During the afternoon an exhibition of diving was given by a troupe, a member of which was M. Walker, of Otago, New Zealand diving champion. Miss Berry, holder, went to the front and led by seven yards at 3 00yds, and finished ten yards ahead, but was disqualified for swimming an incorrect stroke.

Jennings 3. SYDENHAM CLUB. The annual carnival of the Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club was held this afternbon. There was a large attendance, including Councillors M. E. Lyons and T. H. Butterfield, of tlfe Baths Committee. Mr Lyons presented cups and prizes won during the afternoon. These included the Jones Cup, for races of 25, 50 and 100 yards, won by I. Lester, and the Kennett Cup,* for ladies’ 25, .50 and 75 yards races, tied for by Misses N. Lester and V. Ansell. Mr Lyons also offered two trophies for the best boy and girl swimmer in the club, the contest to be decided later. Mr Butterfield also spoke after the prizegiving.
