NORTH ISLAND CHALLENGE STAKES WON BY KARAPOTI

LADY QUEX GETS SECOND PLACE, HUNTING CRY THIRD. Milo Minto Takes First Money In Timaru Cup From Cranleigh. CHIEF INTEREST for sportsmen centred to-day in the result of the North Island Challenge Stakes, of 1000 sovereigns, at the Trentham meeting. It resulted in a win for the first favourite, Ivarapoti, who heat Lady Quex. The St Leger Stakes at the same meeting was won by Lady Pam, with King March second. At the Timaru trots the second favourite, Milo Minto, won the Cup by a length from the seventh favourite, Cranleigh. There were two other meetings, the Combined Clubs’ meeting at Gisborne, and the Oliinemuri meeting.

In the Rimu.lligh Weight, Air Lad* die and Mister Gamp had the race to themselves over the last two furlongs, the former winning very easily. He looks a good prospect in much better

company. Lady Pam narrowly missed defeat in the St Leger. She took the lead from Pewa at the home turn, and was joined in the straight by King March, who hung on in great style. The favourite beat him bj r half a head. It looked a case of very confident riding. Ball Dress was always prominent, but failed over the last furlong, finishing fourth. The Auckland colt, Bronze Eagle, made an exhibition of the big field in the Plunket Nursery Handicap. He shot out at the end of three furlongs and once in the straight streaked away winning with ridiculous ease. High Comedy was always well up, but Oratorian finished well and made it a dead heat for second. View Halloa was almost on terms. Solvent faded out at the end. Cricket Bat finished well. The Thompson Handicap was a good race all the way. Refresher, Pakitere, Silvermine, Arrow Lad, PaganelK,

Laughing Prince and Historic were prominent to the straight. Laughing Prince headed Silvermine a furlong from the post, but the latter outstayed the top weight, winning oil the post by a head. Arrow Lad hung on well a length away. Then came Mount Boa finishing fast, followed by Historic and Eaglet. The Riccarton horse, Full Feat he**, was always in the rear bunch. Karapoti was a hot favourite for the North Island Challenge Stakes, but only Hector Gray’s horsemanship enabled him to beat Lady Quex by half a length. The pair cleared out from the field and had a great battle. Hunting Cry outstayed the others. Lord Argosy showed speed over five furlongs, but then tired. Nightmarch was a non-starter, being a trifle sore. Simba and Chief Joy were always prominent in the SilvCrstream Handicap. The former led to the straight and never looked in danger of defeat, though Chief Joy finished well. Shatter finished on well and was fifth. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Per Pres*? A -e-oe!atlon. NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “ Star.") TIMARU, March 14. Quincev Thorpe had an easy win in the Kingsdown Handicap, leading all through and winning pulling up by halt* a dozen lengths. Royal Purple and Luck}- Voyage were always well placed. Fairyland trotted a sound race and Todd Lonzia showed ‘a lot of speed, but broke twice. He finished last. Honora Bingen, who was favourite, was never near the front division. Compromise, who was favourite for the Trial Handicap, won easily at the finish. He did not get a good position till half the journey was covered, but at the finish he stayed on best. Lord Antrim, who was leading well into the straight, paced a capital race. The three-year-old Royal Parade finished on well. Mohara did not stay, and Ron had every chance, but failed in the final stages. Ron was done at a mile. Fleet Arrow was never dangerous, but Prince Wrack went a great race. In tha Timaru Cup Red Shadow w’as just a little better backed than Milo Minto, with Berry’s bracket third choice. There was a very fine contest and a capital finish. Red Shadow was almost in front with a round to go. but he faded out a quarter of a mile further on. There was a great race up the straight and .six horses were almost in line. Milo Minto

staved out just long enough to win by half a length from Cranleigh, who was in the lead throughout. Then came Hostess, Rollo, Kelp and Great Author. Ratloc and Netta. Oro carried most money in the Seadown Handicap and they finished first and second. Lydia Pointer was out in front in a bunched field with Willie Derby„ Baron Derby and Netta Oro racing next. Along the back the second time, Netta Oro went forward and followed Lydia Pointer into the straight, w’here Ratloc was boxed in on the rails. Once he got clear he came on with a great dash, but could not get nearer than a length to Netta Oro and just beat Logaleen for second in a fine run in the final stages. Lord Matchlight went badly and Willy Derby failed to stay/ Dusolina and Needles fell two and a half furlongs from home. In the Temuka Handicap, Biddy j Parrish was favoYirite. Driven a very j patient race by W. J. Tom kin son, she headed off Lough Guy near the winning post. It was a capital race, full ; of interest throughout. Meree Bingen . was in the lead early, with Biddy Parrish next, the pair having a break ’ on Great Harvester, who headed the , rest.
