The St Mary’s Tennis Club’s new hard courts in Berry Street were officially opened this afternoon by Father C. O’Connor. Prior to the opening Messrs A. R. Cant, G. OUivier, R. Browning, and D. F. Glanville played a match on the courts. At present three courts have been laid down, but it is hoped to have two more ready for next season. A pavilion is also to be constructed, and the new grounds will be very commodious and up-to-date when they are finished. “Tennis is a great thing for the development of health,” said Father O'Connor. in declaring the courts open. “It is one of the finest recreations I know. A healthy body tends to make a healthy mind, and tennis is a health-giving exercise. Thus, besides being beneficial to the body it is also of benefit otherwise. The spirit of friendliness is strong on the courts, and many a friendship has been made in a game of tennis. The sporting spirit learned in play is a great thing. It gives us a great outlook on life, and makes for happier relationship with our follow men.

“The opening of those courts is a good step. Young people need to be brought together, and tennis clubs such

as these are a step in the right direction in the Catholic community.” Mr Browning, on behalf of the Canterburv Lawn 'Tennis Association, congratulated the club on its new courts, and wished them every success.
