Papanui School Committee. The Papanui School Committee met on Wednesday night. Present:—Messrs W. Semford (in the chair), C. Dyer (secretary), A. Donald, F. Claridge. G. Claridge, S. Craighead, J. Cains, and G. Wray. It was reported that the school children subscribed £4 8s 10£ towards the Napier earthquake relief fund. Authority was given to Mr Noble to have the piano tuned, and to Mr Cains to engage a man to trim the edges of the paths. Memorial Hall Committee. The Memorial Hall Committee met last night. Present:—Messrs J. Sturrock (chairman), A. Syme, W. Pool, C.

W. Moore, G. Radford, T. Butterfield, and E. Freeman. The secretary (Mr E. Syme) reported that he had written to the council stating that there was not sufficient funds in hand to meet the rate demand of £72 2s 9d. The reply stated that the council were prepared to forego their share provided the Waimairi Council would bear their two-fifths of the amount. The chairman said that the present depression was the cause of the hall funds being low, but the speaker added that the residents did not always use the Memorial Hall when holding functions. This was to be regretted. With a view to popularising the hall it was decided to write to Messrs 11. Tillman and G. Radford asking them

to convene a meeting of tennis enthusiasts with a view to forming a badminton or table tennis club in the district with the hall for a club room. The date for the annual meeting of the Hall Committee was set down for April 16, and the matter of bringing the roof forward over the library in order to form a supper room will be discussed. Papanui W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the Papanui W.C.T.U. was held at St Gile’s Bible Class Room on Thursday. Mrs Graham presided over a good attendance. An invitation was received from the Riccarton branch to be their guests at their next meeting. It was decided to form a committee with a view to starting a Band of Hope in Papanui in April. Mrs Hopper was appointed superintendent and Mrs Tillman, secretary; Mrs Hay ton, treasurer. A letter was received regarding a visit from Miss Maclay, Dominion Young People’s organiser, and it was decided to ask her to speak at the next meeting. A Papanui Tennis Club. The Waimairi Tennis Club, which plays on the school courts, offered the school committee to put down another court. Two courts do not allow f'>r a match to be played on the home courts, as, while the team is playing, there is no playing area for the rest of the members. The school committee fell in with the suggestion, but the Education Board have turned the offer down. The tennis club have well over £IOO in hand, and at a meeting held on Wednesday it was decided to try and get a new site or to amalgamate with one of the existing clubs with a view to forming one big club. The secretary (Mr F. R. Longley) was asked to inspect a site in Bligh’s Road. Waimairi Tennis Club. The men’s handicap singles are nearly decided. In one semi-final H. Tillman (owe 40) beat J. Glendinning (owe 15 3-6), 9-5; and in the other G. Radford (owe (3-6) is leading from W. Hadley (owe (30 3-6), 7-6. Bcfd light prevented the match being completed. The draw for the ladies’ championship singles (Hart Cup) is as follows:—Miss E. Mussen plays Miss E. Grieve; Miss D. Roberts v. Mrs Longley: Miss F. Hill v. Miss I. Hill; Miss J. Williamsjn v. Williamson; Miss G. Irving a bye. Papanui Cycle Race. The Papanui Young Sports Club held a ten-mile road race last night. There were twenty starters. The results were:—M. Taylor (2min), 24min 35sec 1; L. Ockwell (2§min), 24min 27sec 2; O. Aitken (imin), 23min 27 l-ssec 3. Taylor took the lead after three miles and won with a little in hand. .1. Sutherland secured fastest time from scratch in 23min 20sec. Papanui School.

Beaven presided over the monthly meeting of the Sumner-Red-cliffs Plunket Society. Present—Mesdames Collins, Worrall, Martin, Morten and Sim. Miss Ellis wrote stating that, owing to illness in the family, she would have to resign. For the month of February, 1931. Sumner rooms had been visited by 55 adults, 49 babies and 12 pre-school children. Five homes had been visited. In Redcliffs the figures were:—l9 adults, 17 babies and 7 pre-school children. The gefieral health of the babies had been excellent. On the motion of Mrs Worrall, Mesdames Beaven, Morten, Waller, Sim and Miss Overton were elected an executive. Arrangements for the general meeting were held over till the April meeting. North Beach Card Party. The weekly euchre in aid of the Peace Memorial Hall funds was held in the Rechabite Hall on Tuesday evening, the prize winners being:—Mrs R. Parker and Mr Macfarlane. Sports Ground. A start has at last been made on the clearing of a portion of the reserve at North Beach between the school and Jubilee Avenue, for a sports ground. A number of men employed under the No. 5 scheme were put on to this work on Wednesday. Lif o-Saving. Weather permitting, the last of the interclub surf life-saving competitions run by the Surf Association will be held at North Beach to-mor-row. The competitions will include a fourman alarm rescue (the beltman doing fastest time being recognised as the Canterbury champion beltman), a single-handed rescue and the Canterbury championship resuscitation. The single-handed rescue is the most gruelling test of life-saving in the surf, as the rescuer has not only to swim out to the buoy, but has also to bring the patient ashore without any help, and carry him up the beach using the “ fireman’s lift.” The school boys’ resuscitation will probabl - not be held this year, as the cup has been lost. South Brighton Surf Club. The following six teams have been selected to compete for the Benson Cup to-morrow at 2 p.m.:—(l) W. Manhire, J. Glasson, J. E. Trainer and F. A. Jennings; (2) E. Spreydon W.T.C.U. The monthly meeting of the Spreydon branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Tuesday, Mrs Pirrett presiding over an attendance of sixty members. The weekly social conducted by the New Brighton Municipal Band was held in the bandroom on Wednesday evening last, a very enjoyable evening being spent by the large number of people who were present. Prizes for games were awarded to the following;—Mesdames Jackson, Nuttall and Parsons, Messrs Rennie, Snell and Stevens. The next social will be held on Wednesday evening, March IS.
