NEW BRIGHTON TROTS.

SATURDAY’S FIELDS. The following are the acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday:— IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP (in harness), of 165 sovs. • Trotters only. Class 3.50. One mile and a half.

TRENTHAM NOTES. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, February 24. The weather was fine for galloping at Trentham this morning, but the track was somewhat dead after yesterday’s rain. All work was done on the grass. Moab Queen finished two lengths in front of Invite at the end of half a mile on the two-year-old track in 52 4-ssec. Invite, who is to go to Blenheim, appeared unable to handle the slippery track. Duellona was not moving freely at any part of a mile run in lmin 55sec, and it is unlikely that she will now make the Blenheim trip. Ephialtes, who is to have his next race at the Wellington meeting, sprinted three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. He is looking better than he has at any part of the season and should be a useful winter horse for bad tracks do not seem to worry him. Tcheka, for whom »o engagements have yet been made, covered three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Historic and Eminent were well matched over half a mile run in 50sec, a good gallop. Historic will probably race next in the sprint at Bulls. White Doe and Rothen were to have gone five furlongs but Rothen could not be held back to his companion and at the half-mile hopped off a couple of lengths in front. White Doe sprinted up to him and led him home in 52 1- but neither was doing his best over the early part. Oratorian, who has been suffering from a cold, and Martian Chief went half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Cimabue did an easy half-mile in 55sec. Caught sprinted three furlongs alone, but was not timed. For Blenheim. Peep was doing her work more easily than Wee Lackie at the end of half a mile in 51sec. It was a good effort on Peep's part, and points to her having a chance of earning some stake money at Blenheim. Courtlike, Lady Rene and Dainty Ways, who leave for Blenheim to-mor-row, were each worked over a mile at steady three-quarter pace. Goodman’s own apprentice, L. G. Sinclair, will ride the members of the team on the trip. Dolomite was responsible for another good gallop when he reeled off seven furlongs in lmin 31 3-ssec, taking 52 2- for the final half-mile. He will be ridden in the Marlborough Cup by S. Wilson. Afterwards he will be handed over to his new owner, Mr D. H. Roberts, of Greymouth, who will probably use him as a stallion. Concentrate, who was unable to start at Riccarton owing to having strained a muscle, was out doing easy pace work on the sand. If all goes well he will race at Trentham. Gesture ricked herself at Riccarton in a gallop before the meeting, and could not fulfil her engagements last week. She has now been turned out for a spell, and will not carry colours again till next season. W. Hawthorne had Courageous, Hymgreat, White SquaTl, Thermopylae and Foghorn out doing pace work. Hymgreat will represent the stable at Woodville. La Parleuse, who was also to have made the trip, has injured herself, and has been put aside for a while. Half Acre Sold. The disappointing Half Acre has been purchased on behalf of a Sydney sportsman, and will do his future racing in Australia. Royal Game returned to the track (his morning. He has put on little con-

dition, and it will not need much work to bring him into racing trim. Riding engagements at Woodville include:—B. H. Morris. Granado, Zephyrus and Lineage; J. Barry, Lavington: R. J. Mackie, Arajean, Saltpot and Mandy. HANDICAPPERS WORK UNDER CRITICISM. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, February 24. Dissatisfaction with the handicap framed by Mr G. Paul, for the Mackenzie Handicap on the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting was expressed yesterday by a mrmber of owners and trainers with horses in the race. The cause of the dissatisfaction is that Mr Paul penalised Mountain Dell, the winner of the chief event on Saturday, 12yds, leaving all the other horses on the same marks and not penalising Free Advice, who was second. For a long time it was customary with trotting handicappers to penalise the winner of the chief event on the first day and the runner-up 24yds and 12yds respectively, and the system gave fairly general satisfaction. Lately Mr Paul has departed from the custom, not only at northern meetings but also at southern meetings, and the change has not met with general approval among owners and trainers. Some are entirely in agreement with the system of penalising the winner only and others deem it altogether unsatisfactory. Under the system of limiting penalties the maximum penalties that can be applied for races better than 4.32 class are 24yds for the winner and 12yds for second, but the matter is entirely at the handicapper’s discretion as long as he does not exceed the maximum fixed. SALE OF AMMON RA. GOING TO AUSTRALIA. AUCKLAND, February 28. The negotiations in connection with the sale of Ammon Ra. the two-ycar-old gelding by Limond from Hyades, owned by Dr E. H. B. Milsom, which were reported last Tuesday, were completed yesterday. Mr C. C. Sheath, oydney, becomes his new owner. So far Ammon Ra has contested five races and has won four. He was second in the Rakino Handicap at the Takapuna spring meeting, which was his first start; and since then he has won the Great Northern Foal Stakes, the A.R.C. Royal Stakes, the Wellington Stakes, and the Taranaki Stakes. He will be sent to Sydney by the Ulimarea on March 6.
