HOMES NEEDED FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN.
HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS TO BE EDUCATED HERE. The question of placing some of the boys and girls who w T ere attending the secondary schools in the Hawke’s Bay district in the secondary schools in Christchurch, was discussed with the Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer, to-day, by Messrs H. S. E. Turner and A. O. Wilkinson, president and vice-president respectively, of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor stated subsequently that the Chamber of Commerce had offered to organise an effort in that direction, and it had already made arrangements for placing a few young people in the local secondary schools. Now, however, information had been received from Hawke’s Bay that, although quite a number of the secondary school pupils had been allocated to schools elsewhere, there was a very considerable balance for whom it had not been able to make provision so far. Under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce, therefore, the Mayor added, a public meeting, at which he would preside, was to be held on Friday afternoon at four o’clock in the Chamber of Commerce Hall. It was hoped that there would be a large attendance, not only of members of the Chamber of Commerce and their wives, but also of the general public. One of the chief tasks to be considered in connection with the matter was that of finding suitable homes for the young people who would be placed in the care of the community.
