RECORD YEAR FOR LIBRARY EXPECTED.
The new year opened rather well as regards the issue of books and there was an increase in all departments of the Christchurch. Public Library. From the circulating library 16,693 books were taken out, an increase of 751 compared with January of last year. New members to the number of 111 enrolled and 112 new books were placed on the shelves. At this period of the year the output of new books is not large, but it is expected that as Easter approaches there will be considerably more coming to hand. The reference library again recorded a large increase in the books consulted, no fewer than 9300 being used, compared with 5966 for January last year, an increase of 3334 volumes. Twenty-seven useful volumes were placed on the shelves. The children’s library was rather quiet during the early part of the month owing to the holidays, but towards the end there was renewed activity, and 2221 books taken out, compared with 1929 volumes for January last year. Twenty-two volumes were added to the shelves. With the large number of books on order and the many new members being enrolled, the year 1931 promises to be a record one in all departments of the library.
