N.Z. TEAM WILL BE CHOSEN SOON.

CRICKET.

NO ANNOUNCEMENT YET AS TO ANY AGE LIMIT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 6. Messrs W. S. Brice (Wellington) and F. Williams (Otago), members of the New Zealand Selection Committee, were both present at the CanterburyWellington match, after having studied the form in the Otago-Wellington match. Messrs N. Snedden (Auckland) and Whitta (Canterbury), the other members of the committee, were present at the Auckland-Canterbury and Otago-Auckland matches. It is stated that the New Zealand team for England is to be selected after the Auckland-Wellington match at Auckland. The Otago-Canterbury Shield match has yet to be played, but the New Zealand team will have been chosen before this match takes place. It is expected to be made known about January 27 or 28. The team is to leave for England towards the end of March. No announcement has been made as to whether an age limit is to be set in choosing the New Zealand representatives. SECOND TEST MATCH ENDS IN A DRAW.

ENGLAND'S BATSMEN WIPE OFF ARREARS. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) CAPE TOWN, January 5. Hopes of South Africa snatching victory in the second test faded away as England’s opening batsmen, with the obvious policy of safety, offered a most stubborn front, wiping off the arrears on the first innings with the loss of three wickets. Hammond was again outstanding, displaying extreme caution, and successfully wearing down the attack. Hendren, however, batted with characteristic brightness. The bowlers tried every device to lure Hammond, Hendren and Leyland into traps, and at one stage there were six men on the boundary for the slow bowlers, but the batsmen, realising the great responsibility on them, turned down the opportunities to liven up play. When England were leading by 50 runs there was a sensational episode. Catterall secured the wickets of White, Chapman and Peebles rapidly at low cost, but Hendren hung on grimly, and with only half an hour left a draw became inevitable. South Africa marred their chances of victory by dropping two vital catches, namely Wyatt when nine and Hendren when eleven. Nevertheless, the match is regarded as an auspicious start for the local men, as this was the first turf wicket test played here. Taylor, in this match, reached 2000 runs in test cricket.
