RACING CLUBS WILL ABANDON MEETINGS.
WILL GIVE UP WHILST BETTING TAX OPERATES SYDNEY, January 5. The betting tax is so seriously affecting attendances and the volume of betting that a number of country clubs in New South Wales have decided to abandon racing while the Lang Government is in office. The Premier, Mr Lang, stated that he had noticed that there had been considerable propaganda against the betting tax and complaints of dwindlng attendance at race meetings. This, he felt, was an argument in favour of a curtailment of racing. He would thereford invite his colleagues to agree to a reduction of meetings in the metropolitan area, which would possibly lead to better attendances at those which would be permitted.
