Mantis towed off a Chinese military transport which was ashore on a sandbank near Temple Hill, in a bandit- ridden section of the middle Yang-tze. The transport was in imminent danger of attack by Reds, who the day before heavily fired on H.M.S. Mantis. Mantis replied, inflicting many casualties among. the Reds. Gunboats are daily engaging the Communists in this section of the river.
