STOP WORK MEETING. (Special to the “ Star.”) GREYMOUTH, January 6. As the result of the posting of a potice at the Mt David Sluicing Company's office at Blackwater yesterday, notifying a reduction of wages on the construction of the water race from 20s to 17s per day, taking effect from yesterday, the workers held a stop-work meeting and decided to cease operations until the company either paid the original wage under the old conditions or paid ISs per day, allowing walking time over one mile, and provided a cookhouse for the employees. The workers’ demands are now being considered and the company’s reply will be made known to-day. Man Missing. No trace has been found of the missing Borough Council employee, Thomas Lally It is feared that he fell into the Grey River, which was heavily flooded on Sunday. The police are continuing the search. Shipping. The depth of water on the bar last evening was 26ft 6in. Kartigi is due early and loads coal for New Plymouth and Auckland. Titoki is due on Friday. She loads coal for Onakaka and Wanganui. At the annual meeting of the Blackball Swimming Bath Committee the following officers were elected:— Chairman, Mr A. E. M'Clusky; secretary, Mr C Duncan; starter, Mr P. Duncan; judges, Messrs J. Whyte and J. M’Nicol; timekeeper, Mr L. Kinsella; handicappers, Messrs R. Mountsford and L. Kinsella. Mr T. Frickleton was appointed caretaker. REEFTON NOTES. Bright sunshine recorded last week totalled 29hr 6min; rainfall, 1.77 in; bright sunshine recorded for year, 1958 hr 36min; rainfall, 81.19 in. The sunshine recorded at Hokitika last 3’ear was the lowest for five years, while the rainfall was easily the lowest for ten years. Only on one other occasion has the total been under lOOin. That was in 1923, when 93.59 in fell.
