Most of the Riccarton horses who raced in the North Island during the holidays arrived home to-day- * * # The Riccarton tracks are very quiet at present, and the work this morning pro\-ided no excitement. The horses who were racing during the holidays are having an easy time for a few days. As usual, the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting has attracted a heavy list of nominations. Coming ina few weeks after the holiday circuits, it has no opposition, and draws horses from all parts of the Dominion. Most of the leading performers have engagements, so that the racing should reach a high standard. $ * * * G. J. Pine contemplates taking Don Jose to Trentham. The Archery gelding was one of the disappointments of the holiday campaign, so far as Riccartoo horses were concerned. lie met a lot of bad luck in his races in the north, but he may make amends before long. Minerva! showed improved form during his holiday trip to the West Coast, and F. Christmas has hopes that he will develop into a very useful horse. He may make his next appearance at Trentham. P. V. Mason has nominated Jaloux, Ilkley and Pride for the Trentham meeting. The first named pair raced at Auckland during the holidays, but Pride has done very little this season. W. Stone expects to be at Trentham this month with Lord Thomond and Tray Bond. These two are very well, and they were winners on their holiday trip to the North Island. FI. Nurse will have Sleipner and Charmeuse racing at Reefton this week, and he may take the pair to Trentham later in the month. -ffi R. W. King is keeping Aberfeldy going in useful tasks. He has been nominated for the high weight events at Trgntham. where he may race prominently, as he is in excellent order at present. . -i* Straightcourse had five hard races during his holiday trip to the North Island, and, though he came through the campaign very well, he has earned a rest. His two successes put him out of hack class, but he should continue* to pay his way in open company later on. s>: * * Silver Coot showed signs of soreness during his holiday trip to the North Island, and G. J. Pine has turned him cut for a spell.

r Flair is at present enjoying a rest, but its duration has not been settled. It is possible that she will not be persevered with much longer as a racing proposition. Sapient, who did some racing in Otago during the holidays, will be a performer at Reefton this week, and if she shows her best form she should get some money. * T. Lloyd, who has just completed a successful campaign in the North Island -with Gay Crest, Desert Song, Adelphi and Royal Baby, expects to have the quartette at Trentham this month. They are all in such good form that they will be worth keeping in mind. Nightmarch and True Shalt suffered no ill effects from their racing at Auckland. A. M’Aulay has them freely engaged at Trentham. ¥ ¥ ¥ V Appeal, a promising three-year-old in 11. Donovan’s stable, has been nominated for hack events at the Wellington meeting. 4- '•'* ¥ -zCompris looks none the worse for his racing at the Dunedin and Waikouaiti meetings. He is in steady work at Riccarton and he may make a trip to Trentham this month. Glenrcwan, First Raid. Quinopal and Mount Boa are South Canterbury entries for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting this month. The Oamaru sprinter, Meadow Lark, claims engagements at Trentham this month. He won the Telegraph Handicap, the principal sprint event, two years ago, and repeated the performance last January. Wingatui horses with engagements at the Wellington meeting this month include Black Duke, Caterpillar, Compensation, Master Anomaly, A 1 Jolson, Solmar and Dumblane. Sir Charles Clifford has Full Feather, Ball Dress. Sharp Thorn, Owlsflight and Cricket Bat engaged at Trentham. The three first named were racing in the North Island during the holidays, while the other two will be fresh horses. Paquito is a notable absentee from the nominations for the Wellington meeting this month. Apparently the Auckland trip found him out, necessitating a spell. For the Trentham trip F. D. Jones can rely on First Sight and Solvent, two other members of his Auckland team, with Craigavon and Coroner as mates. South Canterbury stables had a very successful experience at the southern holiday meetings, their representatives winning nine races, besides- being second twelve times and third ten times. Ravine, who figures among the acceptors for the first day’s racing at Reefton, is owned on the West Coast, but he has been trained at Riccarton for some time. He was taken north for the holidays, racing at Manawatu and Wairarapa. where he failed to race up to expectations. He may, however, show a glimpse of his real form at Reefton. Charmaine, a double winner at Invercargill, was a smart two-year-old last autumn, but she failed to strike form early this season. Having come back, however, she should go on now to further successes. She is a sister to Rin Tin Tin, by Some Boy 11. from Fairform, a half-sister, by Boniform, to Satisfaction, the dam of Battle Colours and Satisfy, two useful winners for DCampbell’s Riccarton stable. $ Y * Hawkshaw, a winner at Wairarapa last week, is an Australian-bred three-year-old by Nassau. He was placed three times last season, showing promising form, and his effort last week was highly encouraging, as he won in a style which augured well for his prospects in more important events later on. He max- be a dangerous candidate for the Douro Cup, the rich mile hack event at Trentham this month.

Glenrowan registered the best per formance of his career when he won the Invercargill Cup last week. When he beat Beau Geste at Ashburton last month, he registered his first success at a mile and a quarter, and, as the pace was very slow in the early stages, that race gave no indication to his real merit as a stayer. His Invercargill win was accomplished in attractive style, ar }d now he looks a likely sort tc ~o on winning over a distance. G’ arovan is a six-year-old by Clarenceux, «*nd is the only foal of his dam, Sweet Water, by Sunny Lake from Aphaea, by Stepniak from Britomart. a sister to the New* Zealand Cup winner Euroclydon, and closely related to many other good Otago performers of earlier days. Glenrowan carries the colours of Mr W. C-rossan, a popular southern owner, who has been closely associated w T ith racing over a lengthy period. It does not fall to the lot of many owners to win an important race like the Auckland Cup with the first horse they race, but such good fortune came to Mr M. Greenwood, part owner of Motefe. The victory of the four-year-old goes into history as one of the greatest surprises in connection with the race. Motere is by Lord Quex — Lovematch, and was bred by Mr 11. H. Pharazyn, who, by the way, was not present to see his colours carried to victory. However, Mr M. Greenwood, who acquired a half share in the chestnut. was on hand to receive the gold cup. Mr Greenwood was naturally pleased with the result, and remarked afterward that Motere is the first horse he has ever raced. The honour of training the winner goes to the Te Awamutu trainer, W. Stone. He has had tiie chestnut ever since he -was placed in training. Lovematch, the dam of Motere, was a good mare, by Martian, and among other races won the Wan ganui Cup. It has recently been decided in England as the result of a test case that the use of the totalisator on greyhound racing is quite legal. A charge was laid against all the operators working in a totalisator under an 1575 Vagrancy Act. It was dismissed on the ground that the operators did not benefit by the betting, but were merely servants of the Greyhound Company, and hence did not wager within the meaning of the Act.

In England the Racecourse Betting Control Board deducts 6 per cent .and broken money from totalisator investments. There is no further deduction, and, with a comparatively light turnover, expenses go a long way towards eating up the money” received. In consequence the board has decided to increase the 6 per cent to 10 per cent at all meetings held under the National Hunt_ Committee's Rules. These are jumping fixtures, and, with attendances small during the winter months, the machine turnover is not sufficiently large at the present rate of deduction to give the public adequate service. At some of the small meetings and at point-to-point meetings, the percentage has been 10 per cent since the commencement of the year. The board may have yet to increase the rate at all meetings.

The Aga Khan’s four-year-old Costaki Pasha, by Gainsborough from Cos, has finished his racing career, and has left England to take tip stud duties in France. Costaki Pasha was one of the best two-year-olds of 1928. In the winter of 3929 he was favourite for the Derby, but owing to internal trouble he - was unable to run. In none of his four races as a three-year-old did he do himself justice. This year he showed that he still possessed some of his juvenile speed by winning the Cork aiid Orrery Stakes at Ascot. He afterwards ran Stingo, who was receiving seven pounds, to a length and a half in the King George Stakes at Goodwood, having among others Tag End, Fair Isle, and Grace Dalrymple behind him. In all, Costaki Pasha won stakes to the value of £S27O. TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting will close at nine o’clock to-night. Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting will close at noon on Thursday. Colonial Boy, who won the chief event at the Greymouth Trotting Club's meeting yesterday, is trained by J. Young at Addington, and is one of the team he brought from Scotland. Festival, the winner of the Grey Valley Handicap at Greymouth. is by Sonoma Harvester, and is trained by E. C. M’Dermott, at Addington. She is very partial to the Greymouth track and has raced very well over the halfmile course on more than one occasion. sjc Vican, who won the Intermediate Handicap at Greymouth, is by Brent Eocanda from Violet M, and is a brother to the one-time brilliant pacer Vilo. Vican was raced early in his career by H. Saunders, of Waimate, for whom Vilo won most of her races, but he was gold to his West Coast owner some time ago. Vican s form is a long way below that of Vilo, but he is a smart pacer over short courses. The luck of the New Brighton trainer, 11. Frost, is right out just now’. He has Repute trotting in her best style, and at the Canterbury Park Club’s meeting, in the Progressive Handicap, she went a fine race, one mistake, about three furlongs from home, spoiling her chance. In spite of the mistake, she finished fast behind the placed horses. She was second to Great Glee at Greymouth in the Summer Handicap and a win would be well received by all. Repute is trotting much more solidly than formerly, although she does not seem to stay as well. -s- V -f-' -tWhen Hostess wins a race it will be well deserved. She was second to Arethusa in the Mace Memorial Handicap at New’ Brighton on December 13. At Ashburton, on Boxing Day, she was again in second place, Vecto beating her in the Boxing Day Handicap, of a mile and a quarter. Driven by O. E. Hooper, in the mile harness event on the first day of the Canterbury Park Club’s meeting, she was unplaced, as she went off badly, but on the second day, driven by her trainer, F. G. Holmes, who drove Ngahuia on the first day, she was second to Play Wave in the Middleton Handicap, of two miles, while yesterday she was third to Colonial Boy and Real Girl in the Dominion Handicap at Greymouth. WEST COAST RACING. (Special to the “ Star/’) HOKITIKA, January 5. At a meeting - of the Westland Racing Club this evening the treasurer submitted a report on the Christmas meeting showing: Receipts £3646; expenses £3389: surplus £257. The stJpencliaiy steward’s course report. stated that the course was in good order. The meeting had been well conducted and the officials had been attentive to their respective duties. The draft programme for the one-day meeting on Easter Wednesday. April 8, was approved. The stakes will be £640, including two trotting events.. Arrangements are in hand for the Westland Trotting Club’s postponed meeting on Wednesday.

REEFTON RACES. TO-MORROW’S FIELDS. The Reefton Pockey Club’s meeting, which will bring the West Coast holiday circuit to a close, will be commenced to-morrow and concluded on Thursday. barge fields are engaged in most of the events, and there should be some keen sport, though with a number of horses figuring in more than one race, it is not easy to forecast results. Ravine and Sapient are a couple of newcomers, as far as the West Coast meetings are concerned, as they were racing elsewhere earlier in the campaign, and they will add interest to any events they may contest. The Otago ownertrainer, D. P. Wilson, has had a successful experience with Black Duke, Assemble and Wise Choice, and they are likely to get some more money this week. Sleipner, Charmeuse and Miss Mercia are a trio from Riccarton with good prospects. The following is the programme:—
