Championships. The Southland Rifle Association held tiieir annual championship meeting on January 1 and 2. The meeting was based on an entry of seventy-five, but the total number who attended was seventy. Amongst the entrants was C. Blackwood, of Timaru, who annexed the Canterbury Championship the previous week. Blackwood was not very successful and, with the exception of a minor prize in the opening match, did not collect any other prize-money. This was in strong contrast to his outstanding performance the previous week at Christchurch. The winner of the championship was A. R. Wills, of Invercargill , with 274 points out of a possible 500. an average of just on 46 per match. The leading nine men were as folPoints. A R. Wills (Invercargill) .... 271 W. E. In last week’s notes I promised to publish the Fox Cup Aggregate and the Champion Teams’ Match scores. The Fox Cup Aggregate was a runaway victory .for W. E. Jones, of Timaru. -Jones owed his win to his meritorious shoot in the Service Match. Most competitors’ scores were very poor in »his match, and as the aggregate counted in all matches the majority liad very little chance from the outset. Leading scores were as follows: Points. - E. Jones (Timaru) , .. 20S H. Mason (Chorlton) 195 W. Oakley (Christchurch) .... 190 J. Eryden (Kaiapoi) 11*0 F- Hodge (Sydenham) 182 Major 11. V. Searle (Nelson) .. IS2 Blackwood (Timaru* 180 V. History of Fox Cup. The Fox Cup. which was first presented in 1923 by the widow of the late Mr John Fox as a memorial cup, was originally the Canterbury Cup, first presented by Mr J. Blake in 1572 for competition at volunteer rifle meetings. The first winner was Sergeant Gulliver in 1572. Up to 1579, when Q.M. Sergeant J. Fox won the trophy outright, the following were the winners, and their names, which are on the cup, will prove interesting to the older riflemen: 1873, Dixon; 1874, Gunner Paton; 1875, Sergeant Beattie; 1876, Jolm Cameron; 1577, Corporal Campbell; IS7S, Gunner Houston. Champion Teams Match. The finish of the champion teams match was close and exciting, Timaru winning narrowly by one point from the Christchurch Club’s No. 1 team. The latter were very unfortunate, owing to one of their members putting four points on the wrong target; this, undoubtedly, cost them the match. The totals and scores of the various teams are as follow:

New Brighton Ladies. The New Brighton Ladies' Outdoor Miniature Rifle Club shot the first round in the second trophy competition on Saturday. The next shoot will take place ©n January ,10. Scores were as follows:
