SCORING PARTNERS. Two notable performances in Plunket Shield cricket were made in Wellington's fine start in the first innings against Canterbury at Christchurch on Thursday (says the Wellington Post”). It gave H. M. M’Girr and T. Lowry the distinction of having been associated in three century-part-nerships in Plunket Shield cricket in four innings, and also M’Girr the honour of having compiled over 2000 runs in Plunket Shield matches. In March of last year in the memorable match against Auckland at the Basin Reserve, M’Girr and Lowry in Wellingtons second innings put on 132 runs in 145 minutes before being separated. Lowry made 122 and M’Girr 90. The pair also scored well in the recently-completed match against Otago at the Basin Reserve, in which in Wellington’s second innings the M’Girr-Lowry partnership realised 147 runs in 113 minutes. M’Girr’s total was 141, and Lowry’s 68. And now in Wellington’s first innings against Canterbury the pair put up another fine performance. The Press Association message from Christchurch states that they got together 112 runs in an hour, which is very fast scoring. At the end of Thursday’s play each batsman was unbeaten, M’Girr having scored 57 and Lowry 48. On Friday M’Girr carried his score to 101 and Lowry to 91. The pair added 157 runs. Before the match with Canterbury, M’Girr required 43 runs to complete 2000 runs in Plunket Shield matches, so that his 101 gave him an aggregate of 2058 runs. With this performance M’Girr joins a very select band. Only two others have gained this achievement previously, and they are J. S. Hiddleston (Wellington) and R. C. Blunt (Otago). COAST V. ASHBURTON. (Special to tho " Star.”) GREYMOUTH, January 5. The cricket match, Coast v. Ashburton, was resumed yesterday and resulted in a draw. Ashburton’s first inning's realised 236, Nicol 104 and Drennan 60, being top scorers. Baldwin secured most wickets, taking four for 43.
