Mr H. F. Patchett, of the staff of the Union Bank, has been awarded the degree of Associate in the: International Accountants’ Corporation of Australasia. Aligi Pualagaloa, a clerk in the employ of the Samoan Government, and losesa Tokeo, a student, arrived on the Maui Poraare at Lyttelton to-day, on a visit to New Zealand as the guests of the New Zealand Government. On arrival at Wellington they will spend a few days in the capital and then proceed overland to Auckland. They were interested in the overseas ships at Lyttelton this morning. The electric trains they found particularly interesting, as it was the first time they had seen trains. Mr George Henry Taylor, one of the early settlers of the Wellington district, died at his residence, Pahautanui, a few days ago. Mr Taylor, who was in his eighty-second year, was born in Birmingham. and arrived in New Zealand with his parents by the ship Oliver Laing in 1856. During the Maori War he served in the militia and later joined the volunteers. He was a prominent athlete in his early days; was well known in musical circles, and was for several years a member of the Pahautanui Band. He was a member of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows ior sixty-four years. Goods traffic on the railways has slackened off now that most of the ■wool has been brought into city stores. There will be comparatively little haulage of farm products until the grain season commences next month.
