POPE PIUS AUTHORISES HIS OWN COINAGE.
SPECIAL ISSUE IS STRUCK BY VATICAN. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, January 2. The Rome correspondent of “ The Times ” says that the Pope has promulgated a law authorising his own coinage, including one hundred lire gold pieces, of which the number will be unlimited, but only £IO,OOO worth of silver, nickel and copper coins will be issued in 1931. The gold pieces bear the Pope’s bust on the obverse side and the figure, “ Christ the King,” with sceptre and orb, on the reverse side. Silver ten lire and five lire pieces show the Pope’s bust on the obverse side, with the Virgin, “ Queen of Peace,” and St Peter steering the ship of the church respectively on the reverse sides. The majority of the remainder bear the Papal arms and the figures of the Good Shepherd, St Michael, St Peter, and St Paul. All the new coins are negotiable throughout Italy. A special issue, dated 1929, is appearing to commemorate the Papal jubilee and Italian Treaty recognising the Papal State, the sale of which is calculated to bring in £13,000.
