GIRL CITIZENS HOLD DOMINION CONFERENCE

VARIED PROGRAMME IN IDEAL CONDITIONS. The Dominion Conference of the Girl Citizens from the various branches of ( the Y.W.C.A has had a very interesting and varied programme during the last few days. The weather conditions have been ideal for outdoor activities, in consequence sea bathing and tennis and picnic teas have been well to the fore in the recreation programme. The conference is following a method of group work for the purpose of planning programmes to be used during the coming year by the Girl Citizens throughout the Dominion. One group is working out a home planning and home management programme, another the art of the craftsmen. Another group is busy planning a health programme which will include sections on diet and exercise and will regard the subject from the point of view both of individuals and of the community. Another group is at work on the theme of the Girl Citizen as a citizen of her local community, of her nation and of the world. The work of this group corelates with the work of the group working out a programme on the topic of world fellowship. The hobby hours are being greatly appreciated, the percussion band of the music group being particularly popular. The crafts section is producing very artistic results from •ino-cuts and beaten brass work. The nature study group has spent most enjoyable hours with Miss Douglas in the bush museum, while a visit to the fernery in Pukekura Park, where they were welcomed by a representative of the Parks Committee of the Borough Council was much enjoyed. On two evenings visits have been paid to the observatory, where Mr Morshead has won an absorbed interest from the Girl Citizens by turning the telescope upon the moon and various of the planets. Jupiter with four of its visible moons, and Sirius and the “twin star” of the Pointers of the Southern Cross are now amongst their memories. All these various interests are fitting in well with the daily Bible study with its theme of “The Splendid Heritage.” The theme was worked out in pageant form as a midnight ceremonial on New Year’s Eve when the great figures of the past I passed in procession before the dream fire of the Girl Citizens, committing to them the ' responsibility of passing on to future generations our heritage of beauty and truth. New Year’s Day was spent on Mount Egmont under perfect conditions of sunshine and clear atmosphere.
