JOFFRE’S DEATH REPORTED IN ERROR
MARSHAL’S CONDITION VERY LOW, HOWEVER. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) PARIS, January 1. This evening, Marshall Joffre was still in a state of coma into which he sank at eleven o’clock this morning. His breathing was so slight and irregular that it apparently caused the rumours of his death which were at first current. Crowds gathered in the street. The sight of weeping women and other visitors, including M. Millerand, the exWar Minister of 1914, Colonel Desmazes, who was Joffre’s chief of staff, departing in tears and showing other signs of emotion seemed to confirm the report which the Prefecture of Police declared to be correct. The report was broadcast throughout France. The announcement was followed by the Marseillaise, after which the programmes were abandoned as a tribute to Joffre. Flags on public buildings were lowered to half-mast and many tokens of mourning appeared. The report was not corrected for an hour. Colonel Desmazes is officially inquiring as to how the rumour began.
