SHED AT TEMUKA DESTROYED BY FIRE.

At an early hour yesterday fire dea shed at the rear of Mr W. Palmer's residence in Birkett Street, Temuka. The brigade turned out quickh”, but the fire being out of control, nothing was saved. The building was owned by Mr W. F. Evans and, as far as can be ascertained, was not insured. New Tear’s Eve. New Year’s Eve passed very quietly in Temuka. The usual crowd thronged the streets and business men, on the whole, report a good trade. The young folk indulged in the throwing of harmless crackers, but heavier material in the shape of explosive bombs were not permitted by the local authorities. The crowd was very orderly. The Municipal Band and a combined band of the visiting Salvationists, paraded and selections in the main street. Girl Guides’ Camp at Winchester. A party of Girl Guides from St Mary’s and Chalmers (Timaru) and several from the Waimate companies are encamped at the “ OTd Mill Farm,” Winchester. It is expected that several of the Temuka troop will join the party to-day. Captain Cooper, of St Mary’s, is in charge assisted by Captain Hinton and Lieutenants Mason and Greenall. S.A, Camp. On New Year's Day the Domain was patronised by the visiting members of the Salvation Army, together with those of the local corps. A display of physical exercises was given by the West Coast members during the day. In the afternoon an excellent entertainment was given by the Arowhenua Maoris under the direction of Mr T. Paiki. The camp will break tip today. During their stay at Temuka the performing members of the party included Ensign and Mrs Thomas, Misses pearl Simmons, Mavis Griffiths, Olga Burton, Messrs Stan Whiteside, Gordon Gray. Ensign Taylor and Brigadiers Walls and Suter were the officers who assisted the Brigadier in the control of the camp.
