Deane won the toss aryl South Africa batted first in the' second test. Twelve thousand were present. The teams were:—

South Africa: Deane, Nupen, Mitchell, Taylor, Catterall, Siedle, Cameron, Vincent, M’Millan, Bell, Balaskas. M.C.C.: Wyatt, Levland, Hammond, Hendren, Turnbull, Chapman. White, Tate, Voce, Duckworth, Peebles. The wicket was easy. Siedle and Mitchell were comfortable from the outset and gradually obtained mastery of the bowling. Without taking undue risks the batsmen, especially Siedle, went for the bowling vigorously and received an ovation when they surpassed the record South African first wicket partnership of 171, established in the first test at Birmingham in 1929 by Catterall and Mitchell.

Displaying a brilliant repertoire of strokes, Siedle reached his century in 208 minutes. During his innings he hit thirteen fours. Mitchell, on the contrary, frequently lapsed into a state of lethargy, taking 280 minutes for his hundred. He hit eight fours. • The fielding was of the highest standard. The score at stumps was one for 280. South Africa is in a strong position as the wicket is crumbling. Much therefore depends on whether South Africa bat all to-morrow, letting England bat the last two days on a difficult wicket. Scores:— SOUTH AFRICA. First Innings.
