PHOSPHATE SHIP JUNE SAILS AFTER DISPUTE.

When the phosphate ship June was ready to put to sea on Wednesday afternoon, what remained of the crew refused to take the vessel to sea . following the allegation that inferior food was provided on the trip to Nauru and Ocean Island. At 10.5 a.m. yesterday, however, the vessel sailed for Port Chalmers. In addition to the seven men who signed off the ship, fifteen men seamen and firemen, were left ashore. The only crew on board, so far as is known, is the captain, three officers, three engineers, two stewards, the cook, a sick firemen, and two other firemen who are refusing duty. Shortly before sailing time on Wednesday a representative from the seamen’s quarters and one representing the firemen, walked on to the bridge to interview the captain, but the captain, it is alleged, would not meet the deputation. It was received, however, by the Norwegian Vice-Consul at Christchurch and Mr J. Garrard, representing Kinsey and Co., agents for the ship. The deputation, it is* stated, pointed out that the seamen on board had signed on for eighteen months, and that the articles expired on December 1. Under the Norwegian law they -were thus entitled to be paid off and sent back to Norway. They desired to leave the ship owing to alleged bad treatment mostly through inferior food supplied at Ocean Island. The firemen who had signed on at various Australian ports asked for New Zealand wages and conditions. The men alleged that all the satisfaction they could obtain from the Vice-Consul was that they should take the vessel to Port Chalmers and there place the case before the Norwegian Consul. It was also pointed out that in any case the vessel was ten hands short and could not go to sea so short handed. The vessel put out into the stream at 3 p.m. The crew were ashore. The)' had very little money, but among them they managed to find enough to pay a night’s board on Ne%v Year’s night, and they hoped to have cash to pay last night’s lodging. The men state that before they rejoin the vessel they will have to be given an assurance in writing that they will be given New Zealand wages and conditions. Some of the men who signed on at Melbourne without articles state that they will not rejoin the
