FIREMAN COLLAPSES WHILE AT HIS POST.
Per Press Association. WANGANUI, January 1. Mr Alexander Hird, foreman of the Central Fire Brigade, collapsed and died while on dut> r at a fire at one o’clock this morning. The brigade had been called to St George’s Gate, part of 'the old residential quarter of Wanganui, to a blaze in an unoccupied house. The attack was in charge of Superintendent Williams in the first instance, but a call, which ultimately turned out to be a false alarm, took him away, the command of the brigade falling on Mr Hird, who died before the fire was extinguished. An inquest was opened this morning and adjourned. Deceased was thirty-six years of age. He leaves a wife and two children. He had been six years with the brigade, taking the foreman’s position after being in charge at Castlecliff. He was a splendid t3 r pe of fire-fighter.
