LARGE CROWDS AT SOUTH BRIGHTON.

carnival at pleasant POINT HELD YESTERDAY. As usual, the South Brighton Gala at. Pleasant Point attracted large crowds yesterday afternoon. The president, Mr A. E. Lawry, in a short address, stated that, this was the eighth South Brighton Gala, seven of which had been held on the Pleasant Point Domain. The total amount raised by these galas was approximately £ISOO. Of this, £I3OO had been spent on improvements to the Domain and the balance bad been given to the South Brighton Tennis, Surf and Yachting Clubs to help them to get established. Mr La wryread apologies from Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and Mr W. J. Walters, who were unable to be present. The Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw), In officially declaring the gala open, congratulated the South Brighton residents on their successful efforts. The Pleasant Point Domain was unequalled in Canterbury as a picnic ground and playground for children. A great feature was the safety it afforded children. A short address was also given by Mr J. S. Ainsworth. There was practically every variety of side-show. An excellent band conducted by Mr Letliaby was present, and a programme of children’s athletic events was held. In the evening a dance, under the management of the South Brighton Tennis Club, was held in the Bridge Street Hall for the gala funds. The net proceeds from this year’s gala will be allocated as follows: 40 per cent, to the South Brighton Tennis Club, 10 per cent to the South Brighton Progress League, 3 0 per cent for improvements i to the Pleasant Point Domain, and 2 0 per cent to be kept as a nucleus for future galas. The officials were:—President, Mr A. E. Lawry; organiser, Mr J. Orsborn; joint secretaries and treasurers, Messrs F. Woodward and W. Hulme. Good work was done by the St John Ambulance, no fewer than five lost children being returned to their parents, and many minor injuries being attended to.
