RACING & TROTTING

By

“ARGUS."

RACING NOTES. In the Shade, though a good horse on other courses, including Riccarton, does not appear to show his best form at Eilerslie. He failed in the Auckland Cup, while he did badly again yesterday in the Racing Club Handicap. Possibly he will make some amends if he makes a trip to Trentham this month. * * * * Haying got through the summer meeting, the Dunedin Jockey Club has lost no time in circulating the programme for the autumn fixture. As was to be in expected, in view of the continued drop in receipts, the committee has found it necessary to reduce the stakes. With the exception of the Champagne Stakes, for \vhich nominations have closed, every race on the programme has been made to bear its share of the reduction. The Dunedin Cup has been dropped to £650, a substantial drop from the £IOOO stake last year. This, however, is the heaviest cut' arid the programme still caters well for horses of all classes. Nominations will close on Friday, January 23. * * * * Karapoti has met Cylinder three times this season and has won each time. Excuses were made for the defeat of Cylinder in the Great Northern Guineas, and backers were prepared for a different result in the King’s Plate this week, but it was not forthcoming. Each of those events was run over a mile, but Karapoti showed clearly in yesterday’s race that he could stay as well as sprint, as he won easily. He is by General Latour, who left a few ■useful gallopers, though nothing else of the best class, and probably he gets a lot of his quality from his dam, Kilbeggan, a Kilbroney mare from Ronga, by Charlemagne 11., from Madden, the dam of All Red and Ukraine, the lastnamed the dam of Sasanof. He & He He Dr Louisson’s two-year-old filly, Royal Baby, showed a lot of speed soon after she was broken in, and though she failed to win in Sydney, she was in good form when she returned to Riccarton for the November meeting. She demonstrated there that she could go fast, but she did not stay. A few weeks ago she was placed at Wooclville, and yesterday she won the Mid-1 summer Handicap at the Auckland meeting. This was easily her best performance to date, and in staying out six furlongs successfully, she gave evidence of much improved stamina. Royal Baby is by Chief Ruler from Baby Doll, an Australian-bred mare by W allace from Campania, by Robinson Crusoe. Campania spent the early part

of her stud career in New Zealand, where her progeny included Miss Dela.al, a big winner in her day, with the

Great Northern Derby among her success; also Master Dalaval, an Auckland Cup winner. On her dam’s side, therefore, Royal Baby is bred on stout lines and she may stay on fairly well, though most of the successes of Chief Ruler’s stock have been gained in sprint events.

The win of Gay Crest in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap would be a very popular result at Eilerslie yesterday. Without questioning the justice of the decision, which robbed him of the first prize in the Auckland Cup, the public must have recognised in yesterday’s success a well-earned reward for Dr M. G. Louisson for his bad luck on the opening day. Gay Crest was bred in Australia and was purchased as a yearling by the Riccartort trainer, F. D. Jones, who raced him for a time last season, selling him in February to Dr Louisson, for whom he proved an immediate success, winding up with a win in the Great Autumn Handicap. He 'did his spring racing this season in Sydney, finishing off the trip with a win on the concluding day of the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting. On his return, he failed to realise expectations at Riccarton, but he commenced his present trip north with a win at Woodville, following which he ran two of his best races at Eilerslie. Gay Crest appears to be an improving horse, and except for his habit of boring at the finish of his races, he has excellent prospects of winning more good stakes over a journey before the end of this season. TROTTING NOTES. Rapture went quite a good race, but had no chance with the winner in the Introductory Handicap. The great Audubon gelding showed some form at Ashburton last week but improved on that race. * * * * Happy Land had every chance in the Templeton Handicap and he came into the straight with a good lead. In the last furlong, however, he stopped very quickly and finished third. * He He * Eugene d’Oro made a somewhat slow beginning in the Islington Handicap, and this may have cost him the race. He put in a fine run three furlongs from home and was just beaten. Great Author, who won a double at Westport, went a fine race in the Lyttelton Handicap. He is a very prbmising younf pacer by Author Dillon, whom he much resembles. He fought out a hard finish with fine courage. Hf He. He *

Delightful, who is a very fast pacer out of the barrier, won the Islington Handicap by a narrow margin. He showed great brilliancy early in his | career, but he has hardly raced up to j expectations over long distances.

Dann3’ Boy went a much better race * n Railway Handicap, in which he finished second to Mercury, than he did at Ashburton, where he raced very badly in the mile saddle event. Danny Boy is at his best in saddle events.

* * * * Great Nelson, who was second favorite for the Introductory Handicap, showed a lot of speed at the end of the first mile. He did not quite maintain his effort but he finished up third and gave his best showing since coming to Addington, to be trained by F. G. Holmes.

* * * * Rollo, who finished second to Real Girl in the Templeton Handicap, went away smartly, and he had a good run all through the race. He stayed on well and now that he is settling down at the barrier he may do better in future races.

Real Girl deserved her success in the Templeton Handicap, as she raced very consistently at the Forbury Park Club’s meeting, at the end of November, without winning. She is by Real Guy and possesses both speed and stamina. It looked at one stage of the race as though she was beaten but she came on well at the finish.

Stand By, by winning the Introductory Handicap, gave another win to C. S. Donald, who also drove him. The Belfast trainer is having a great run of success this holiday time. Stand By is a solid and reliable trotter, who will improve further. He was raced for some time by A. Smith, of Waimate. He is by Nelson Bingen from a Bon Homme mare, so he is bred on sound trotting lines.

The surprise of the Canterbury Handicap was the showing of Vesuvius, who tried to win from end to end in a very fast run race, after a very brief training preparation. lie was operated on about four months ago for throat troubles and the operation appears to have been a great success, as Vesuvius went his fastest two mile race to date. If he keeps sound he should soon win a race in the best company.

Olive Nelson won the Stewards’ Handicap in decisive fashion. The West Coast owned mare finished second to Great Author in the Westport Cup a week ago, and her Addington victory was anticipated. She is a high grade trotter, with several victories to her credit. She is only a four-year-old and she is likely to show further improvement. Handicapped at 4min 41sec, she went 4min 33 4-ssec.

Editor, who finished second to Sahib in the Au Revoir Handicap, ran third to Vecto and Hostess in the Boxing Day Handicap at Ashburton last week. He raced well in November over two miles, but since that time he has been raced over short distances. In the Au Revoir Handicap he did not seem to put much dash into his work in the final stages.

Sahib, who looked well at Ashburton, where he put up a fair performance in the Boxing Day Handicap of a mile and a quarter, accounted for the Au Revoir Handicap, just beating Editor. Sahib was bred by Mr J. Westerman, being by Logan Pointer from Becky M. He is a useful sprinter, either in saddle or harness. He is usually rated as a non-stayer, but he finished on well in his latest effort.

Had Stanley T. gone away right in the Stewards’ Handicap, it would have been a firie contest between the imported horse and Olive Nelson. Stanley T. is now on a mark from which he will have to mend his ways at the barrier to succeed. In this race he seemed likely to right, but he broke and -would not settle down till the field was well on the journey. Once he got going he never made a mistake and he showed exceptional speed.

Mercury created a surprise when he won the Railway Handicap, as he was one of the outsiders of the field. In the concluding stages Mercury drew right away and won easily. He was bred in Australia and is by the New Zealand sire Adonis. He was owned for a time by Mr Fuller, of Blenheim, and was in M. B. Edwards’s stable, but recently he went into the ownership of E. R. Husband, who trains him at New Brighton. He was ridden by M. B. Edwards, who thoroughly understands the pacer. Hi * * *

Travis Axworthy, who is usually heavily backed in his races, paid a substantial dividend when he won the Canterbury Handicap. He raced in the New Zealand Cup in November, but did not go up to expectations, and is usually regarded as best over short courses. He is a brilliant pacer, and he proved in this race that he possesses stamina also, as in a fast run race he finished with a fine burst of speed. F. G. Holmes was seen to advantage in the sulky, as he was well placed all the way and came at the finish with a well judged run.

Erin’s Lynn raced particularly well at Addington in November, but later, at New Brighton, she did not do so well. In the Lyttelton Handicap she was driven a judicious race by her trainer, G. S. Smith, and just beat Great Author. In the concluding part of the race it looked as though Erin’s Lynn came over on Great Author, who was on the rails. Erin’s Lynn was bred by her owner, Mr C. W. Hammond, and is by the Hal Zolock horse, Erin’s King, who was a good stayer in his racing days. Her dam Cora Lynn, was raced successfully by Mr Hammond. Erin’s Lynn looked like making a high grade pacer over tw r o miles early in her career, but she trained off and it is only since going into her present trainer’s stable that she has shown improvement FEWER BOOKMAKERS. EFFECT OF TAXATION. SYDNEY, January 1. The New Year’s Day meeting of Tattersall’s Racing Club was held at Randwick. The attendance was officially estimated at 25,000, as compared with 40,000 at the same meeting last year. A number of bookmakers refused to pay the Government annual tax, of £7O, pending- the likelihood of the 10 per cent winnings bets tax being modified or repealed. Over fifty bookmakers’ stands were unoccupied. A plain-clothes constable seized a telegram at the racecourse telegraph office, alleging that the sender was communicating a bet to a starting-price bookmaker in the city, thereby endeavouring to defeat the winnings bets tax. The incident caused a commotion. The principal results are:— NEW YEAR’S GIFT HANDICAP. Sir Chrystopher, 9.0 (Munro) 1 C'ompodonico, 8.7 (M’Lachlan) 2 Panola, 9.12 (Pike) . . 3 Fourten started. Voleuse and Spearman tried to overtake Jeypore in the straight, but the latter finished too strongly and won by half a length, with four lengths between second and third. Star d’Or was fourth. Then came Dalston and Pavilion well back. Time—2min 313 sec.
