ATHLETES RACE BRILLIANTLY AT NEW YEAR’S DAY SPORTS.

Held yesterday at the Amberley Domain, the annual sports meeting: of the North Canterbury Caledonian Society proved one of the most successful athletic gatherings of the present season. Attended by the most favourable weather conditions, the meeting attracted nearly 1000 spectators, many of whom made the journey from Christchurch. For them the events of the day were full of interest. Well-contested running races, which mostly resulted in cios*a finishes, and cycling events of a good standard provided many thrills and much excitement. Highland dancing and piping competitions also played their part in the success of the day. Excellently controlled by capable officials, the programme, which was a large one, was put through well up to time, there being no hitch in the working of the arrangements at any part of the day. Careful preparation of the tracks during the week resulted in these being in splendid condition, and madte matters enjoyable for competitors. The weather was fine and warm and conditions were ideal for both competitors and spectators. Taken all round the society has good reason to feel that its work in staging the meeting was justified by the results obtained. Many of the best amateur athletes of Canterbury participated in the various events. The competitors were in good form, and in the running races some fast times were recorded. George Hart scored a brilliant victory in the seventyfive yards championship, covering the distance in 7 3-ssec, a time which has seldom been bettered in New Zealand. Hart, who started in a field of four, outclassed the other men, winning by nearly two yards. The other sprint races were all of a high order, the finishes being close and exciting. A good field faced thte starter in the President’s Handicap of 120 yards. The race was won bj' W. J. T. Maunder, a young district competitor who showed speed that was too much for members of Christchurch ciubs who contested the race. One of the best finishes of the day was witnessed in the quarter mile handicap, when after a thrilling race Thacker, of the Old Boys Club and Clark, Sydenham, breasted the tape together. The race was run *n the good time of 50 3-ssec. In the half-mile handicap, which was another fine race, Thacker proved just tco good for Clark, beating him by two yards. Fulford, of Sydenham, registered a fast performance in winning the mile handicap from 110yds in 4min 25sec. The principal cycling event, the Caledonian Wheel Race, was won by J. L. Richards in convincing style, this competitor having a comfortable margin in hand from the rest of the field when lie crossed the lino at the finish. Richards also won the five mile handicap, and, to" complete a good all-round performance, he was placed second in the mile and a half event. In X. Mowatt, Waikari possesses a promising field event competitor. His performance in winning the high jump from scratch at sft 4in and the long jump at 20ft was an excellent one. In every way the Dunsandel Sports Association’s annual athletic meeting held at the Dunsandel Domain yesterday was a success. The entries compared well with those of last year, and were particularly good in the cycling events. There were fewer entries from Christchurch, but the number of local competitors showed an increase. The racing was of a good standard and many close finishes resulted. The three miles cycle championship of Canterbury was won by W. G. Watt in 7min 4 3sec. Previously Watt had not shown any performances on the track, but he had competed successfully in road races. timaru meeting. The fifty-sixth annual sports of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, held at the grounds. Patiti Point, yesterday, were productive of a fine standard of sport, both amateur and professional. A large attendance watched the sports in glorious weather. During the afternoon Mr Oscar Garden, who arrived in Timaru yesterday as the guest of the president, Mr R. A. Rodgers, was present, and later he flew his ’plane, Kia Ora, over the grounds. The organisation reflected credit on the committee and secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser). The principal event of the day was the South Island Mile Bicycle Championship and Blue Riband, the final providing a thrilling finish between A. C. Ritchie and L. W. Hill (Christchurch), and last year’s winner, W. Willmott, of Timaru. Ritchie beat Hill by inches for first place, with Willmott a length away third. There were eight starters in the final, and for the first time round, the order was Crofts, Hill, Leatham and Ritchie. The order was the same until the start of the last lap. When about twenty-five yards around on the run home Willmott jumped out from the field and had a twenty yards lead before Ritchie and Hill set out after him, leaving the rest of the field standing. Hill caught Willmott fifty yards from home and Ritchie overhauled Hill over the last few yards. It appeared as though Willmott had made his solo burst too soon. Ritchie received the Blue Riband from Mrs K. A. Rodgers, wife of the P The results of the sports, which will be continued to-day, are as follows: — Cycling. HALF-MILE HANDICAP. First h*eat: N. H.
