If He Were Mussolini.

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —Let me assure “ Aldwin ” that no strong man has ever solved other men s troubles, although the Christ and many lesser lights have shown us the way to do so but we must do the solving. Did the Christ leave the world materially any better for His coming? Not a bit of it! \ou can teach a boy, but he must do the learning. This is a fundamental law of nature, from which we cannot escape. All faculties, mental, moral, spiritual, which we might possess, have been gained through personal effort, and this is the only means that will gain for us those possessions that do not decay and will outlive even the death of our bodies. That is why I am a democrat, because Democracy gives us the chance to solve our problems and express the result of our experience through the ballot box, and it every member of our community gave as much thought about solving the problems of the human race as he gives trying to solve the horse races, to-day, individually and as a nation, we would be far better off in evefy way. There is nothing wrong with Democracy, but the fault lies in its component parts, in the same way as the strength or weakness of a building rests in its material units forming the structure. Therefore, as we solve our own problems, to that extent have we solved the problems of the world. Therefore, my dear 44 Aldwin,” do not look for a dictator; do not be a slave; show that you are a true descendant of those men who gave their very lives that we might be free. Our pioneer settlers tackled their hard tasks with honour. Let us do the same, for within every problem lies its own solution, and if all of us —farmers, workers, professionals of all kinds tackled the task before us as a duty incumbent on us in a fraternal spirit, we would soon find the real solution, and we would have also gained that moral add spiritual strength which would help us to take the next step in the eternal march of human progress. When I fight Mussolini, it is not the man I am aiming at, but the dictator, who brought nothing but misery to the land of my own birth, and also I wish to help those who cannot help themselves —men of culture, upright and honest, who are perishing in pestilential gaols for daring to oppose his diabolical regime of Fascism. If “ Aldwin ” is anxious to find the real answer my advice is to join the economics class at the W.E.A. But just now I will tell the cause of our troubles. The earth and all in it was bestowed on man in order that he might obtain from it all he needed, but instead of using the natural wealth for use and mutual aid, man used it to feed his own greed. Instead of farming the land, we have farmed values till at the present day it is starved and bankrupt. Now we mu 4 learn that the purpose of human activity service, and not profit.—l am, etc., H. COLONNA.
