WHARES NOT NEEDED FOR AMERICAN MILLS.

ARBITRATION COURT GIVES ITS DECISION. The Arbitration Court has made the final decision in the matter of “tin mills,” and their application to the North Canterbury Threshing Mills Employees Award. “ Tin mill ” owners, who were being added to the list of emplo3 7 ers under the award, made an application to the Court when it last sat in Christchurch for exemption from certain clauses of the award, and the application was opposed by the union. The court, which comprised his Honor, Mr Justice Fraser, Mr W. Cecil Prime (employers’ assessor) and Mr A. L. Moriteith (employees’ assessor), has given the following decision:— “ The following names shall be added as parties to the award:—L. Donald (Leeston), E. W. Eaden (Ashburton), J. A. Foster (Ladbrooks), W. D. Jelfe (Waiau), T.-C, Robinson (Rotherham), Thwaites Brothers Hororata) and T. M. Whittington (Motunau). “ That the following special provisions shall apply to the parties above mentioned:— (1) In the case of . American and similar mills operating within a radius of ten miles from their base, it shall be sufficient compliance with the requirements of clause S of the award if the employer (a) conveys the workers to and from their respective places of residence each day, and (b) arranges, where the. -workers do not provide their own meals, for the supply of sufficient and substantial meals to the workers at the usual times and at reasonable prices, and (c) makes provision for adequate shelter (and where necessary for conveyance thereto) in case of inclemenc3 r of the -weather interrupting the work.” The judge, in his memorandum, said that the decision was made by the majority of the court. Mr Monteith had protested that the ten miles radius was too long, but had agreed on the other points.
