NO GRANT GIVEN FOR SEA CADET SCHEME.

The committee of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League met last evening, Mr D. Manson presiding: present: Mesdames J. H. Hall, H. Wyatt and A. E. Smith, Miss C. Cresswill, Messrs C. Curtis. A. M’Gillivray and T. H. Foster, Lieutenant-Commander H. Barker and Mr C. J. Treleaven (secretary). Receipts from the annual appeal totalled £419 Bs, and expenditure amounted, to £292 14s. leaving a balance of £ll6 9s. The statement of accounts showed receipts to be £386 17s lOd and expenditure at £223 17s Id. Correspondence was received from the Hon J. G. Cobbe, for the Acting-Prim# Minister, the Hon E. A. Ransom, stating that the grant of £SO asked for by the League for the Sea Cadets could not be made owing to the financial position. In commenting on the entries In the l-ecent essay competition, Mr Treleaven said that they were of a high standard. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs C. Aschman and F. D. Waller, who judged the competitions. The sum of 30s was voted to th« Christchurch Competitions Society for the purpose of prize-money in a competition for a recitation by a boy member of the League. It was decided to entertain the Sea Cadets at an entertainment, the matter being placed in the hands of the Junior League. A motion that Christmas greeting cards be printed and forwarded to members of the League was passed.
