FLAPPERS WELCOME MAURICE CHEVALIER
MOVIE ACTOR PAYS VISIT TO LONDON. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, November 29. A multitude of flappers, old and young, invaded Victoria Station and mobbed Mr Maurice Chevalier, the actor, who appears definitely to have dethroned Valentino. He arrived by special train, and thus had a platform to himself. The waiting crowd passed the time singing some of Mr Chevalier’s songs. W hen the actor appeared there was an immense uproar, girls throwing kisses, waving handkerchiefs and crying welcomes, to which Mr Chevalier, who was wearing his famous grey Trilby straw hat, pursed his lips whimsically and waved in the direction of the seething crowd, while gramophones continued to play his songs. Mr Chevalier then stepped to the microphone installed on the platform, and said in hesitating English, “ I am happy to return to London.” Only one girl secured his autograph, but a number managed to perch on the running-board of his motor-car for a few seconds, until the police guard pushed them off.
