DIARY-WRITING.
THE ART of diary-writing receives an annual fillip about this time every year, for not only do people like to keep holiday records, but yearly Christmas lists generally include some form of diary. Yet the externally imposed duty to fulfil the pious hope of friends is not the inspiration of the true diarist. The charm of a diary is that one may laugh at other people without offence or exhibit one’s own faults with a “ God forgive me!” like Pepys. Intimate and truthful, it may take the place of a confessional, except that the writer is not always a penitent. But apart from the pleasure of releasing secret thoughts, diary-writing has three advantages. It is an aid to the art of simple self-expression, it clarifies one’s thoughts, and it helps one to know one’s self.
