ROUND THE SUBURBS

North Beach Roads. Wainoni Road, which is the main road from the city to North Beach, is showing several rather bad pot-holes and the tar surface of the Bower Bridge is in bad order. The Wainoni Road tar surface has stood traffic wear well, especially in view of the extra traffic since the Sea View Road bridge has been under reconstruction. As there is a possibility of this bridge being temporarily closed to traffic, it is all the more necessary that Wainoni Road and the Bower Bridge should receive attention. :: :: :: North Brighton W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the North Brighton branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist Church last Tuesday, Mrs S. G. Goring presiding. A motion of condolence with Mr E. A. M. Leaver and relatives in the death of Mrs Leaver was passed. It was decided to hold the annual meeting and election of officers in February. After some discussion, it was decided to have a combined L.T.L. and cradle roll picnic in the domain on December 6, at 2.30 p.m. Members promised to bring refreshments and prizes for the children. Mrs Lawson gave a report of the L.T.L. work, which showed progress. A report was received from the North Brighton “Y” branch, much good work having been accomplished during the year. Mrs A. Florance was appointed superintendent of this department. Mrs A. 11. Henry, the retiring superintendent, was thanked for the interest she had taken in the work. North Beach Surf Club. The North Beach Surf Club are considering the question of having a more distinct club costume and badge. So far, nothing definite has been decided on as the prices asked have been prohibitive. At the last meeting of the club’s executive a suggestion was made that apart from the costume and badge for competition purposes, a more simple type of badge be designed which every member of the club will be expected to have attached to his or her costume. If this suggestion is brought into effect it will prevent non-members from using the pavilion when they have no right to do so. The sun-bathing enclosure for the use of club members has become very dilapidated owing chiefly to the sand drift. The club intend having the fences repaired and

the sand inside the enclosure levelled, the latter to be done by the members themselves. This work should improve the appearance of the foreshore. Vandalism. A resident of Saltaire Street has had a number of very choice poppy and lilac flowers stolen from her garden. The matter has been reported to the police, as apart from the loss of the flowers, considerable damage has been done to the young lilac trees. North Beach School Tennis. The North Beach School tennis team met the Fendalton School team in the third round of the Primary Schools’ Competition, the North Beach team winning by seven sets to three. :: Memorial Service at North Beach. The vicar of St Faith’s, New Brighton, will take the service. Euchre Party at North Beach. The weekly euchre party, held in aid of the Peace Memorial Hall funds (North Beach), continues to be well attended. At the last party the prizes were won by Miss R. Mortimer and Mr Hay. North Beach Personals. Mrs T. Hughes, of Feilding, who has been visiting her brother, Mr E. A. M. Leaver, of Osborne Terrace, has returned north. Mrs W. S. Bussell, of Osborne Terrace, has returned from Waimate, which she visited on account of the death of her father. Miss Hilda Williams, Bowhill Road, who has been on the nursing staff of St George’s Hospital, will join the staff of the Christchurch Hospital on December 4. Mrs L. P. Williams returned on Friday from a short holiday at Timaru. Shirley Christmas Fair. A grand Christmas fair is to be held in the Shirley Methodist Sunday School on Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6, from 2.30 to 10 p.m. The fair

On Tuesday evening, at Shirley, the New Brighton colts, Summerfield, Howard, Corliss, Watson (s) beat the Shirley colts for the Colts’ Shield—24-18. Barrow Fair. A Barrow Fair will be held in the New Brighton Methodist Hall on Wednesday, December 3, at 7.30 p.m. There will be Christmas gifts, produce, cakes and sweets offered for sale. Saifors’~Society. The New Brighton branch of the Sailors’ Society held the monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs Bishop. There was a good attendance and the various reports were satisfactory. It was reported that the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe had visited the Institute at Lyttelton and complimented the board and various ladies’ guilds j for their good work in making such provision for the sailors when in port. It is now time for the filling of the ditty bags which are distributed at the Christmas tea which is given annually for the sailors, and a whist drive is to be held shortly in aid of this function.
