Here is a story with a moral—Some months ago the Rangiora County Council requested tenders for the supply of a new truck; these tenders were finally reduced to three—Reo, and two other trucks well-known throughout New Zealand. The Reo was the most expensive of the three. The Council then decided on a test to choose between these three; If yards of shingle were to be picked up by each truck in turn from the Ashley river bed and carried to the road a mile away. Particular care was taken that the test should be exactly the same for each, and the load was measured every time by a qualified surveyor. The first competitive truck was loaded and the driver climbed in and tried to start. The truck refused to move an inch, and finally had to be unloaded before it could extract itself. The second competitive truck, a. six-speed joB, then attempted the test. After being bogged three times, it finally, with great difficulty, reached the road. Then came the Reo—a standard four-speed If* ton truck. Bucking and rolling, it carried its load without a moment’s faltering, with the engine ticking over almost at idling speed. Then it gave a repeat of this wonderful performance,—and the Council were so impressed that they purchased two Reo’s instead of one ! The moral is this. First, that the little extra price of a Reo makes a difference that’s immense. And secondly, when you are purchasing a truck, test the Reo out under actual working conditions against its competitors.
