Particulars of the cheap fares and train arrangements in connection with the races to be held at Ashburton on Saturday, December 6, are advertised in this issue. A special horse train leaves Christchurch at 8.10 a.m., and a special passenger train at 10.5 a.m. y Mr W. E. Leadley, a member of the Unemployment Board, stated to<hay on his arrival from Wellington that, the board had not yet had an opportunity of considering the position of unemployed men who were not able to pay the first instalment of the Unemployment Levy. He tthought it was probable that arrangements would be made for men in such circumstances to be given employment by the board and the instalment of 7s 6d deducted from their wages. If that could be done it might be arranged for the 7s 6d to be deducted from sustenance allowances. The question of payment of sustenance, however, was not discussed by the board at the meeting held during the week.
